There is a big difference between Pc computer speaker systems and quality most people expect from their hi fi. There is also a big difference in price, so it pays to know what to look for.

iPod Speaker systems
This can really be considered the entry point into the world of high quality audio. If you are short on space then mp3 speaker systems such as the B&W Zeppelin provide high quality audio in a small package.

Stereo speakers systems
If you want more than an all in one iPod dock then the next step is to buy a stereo speaker system. The minimum equipment required is an amplifier and a pair of speakers.

Budget
Expect to pay upwards of five hundred pounds for a good quality set of speakers with a bundled amp. In the world of high quality audio this is considered a low budget. Top end systems can cost thousands of pounds. From this starting point, you will be able to connect your other hi-fi such as CD players, TVs and game consoles.

Design
Generally, the physics of speaker design means a larger speaker, better quality sound. One of few exceptions to this rule is Bose Cube speaker system which use extremely powerful magnets and clever electronics to deliver stunning sound quality.

Surround speaker systems
If you are serious about watching films then buying surround sound speaker systems is the way forward. Home cinema speaker systems consist of a DVD or blu-ray player, surround receiver and a set of surround speakers. It is possible to buy budget JBL speaker systems but it may be worthwhile buying separates so that you can upgrade your setup as your passion develops.

Set up
When buying home theatre speaker systems look for at least a 5.1 set up. This means five surround satellite speakers and one sub woofer. It is even possible to buy 6.1, 7.1 and even 9.1 speaker systems. Top quality home theatre amps will also be capable of processing THX and DTS signals.

When buying a speaker system it is important to listen to a set up before buying. What sounds good to one reviewer may not be to the taste of another. Independent hi fi shops often have listening rooms so that you can audition their equipment before buying.
