With so many different makes and models available, buying a laptop computer can be a daunting task. This article looks at some of the factors you need to consider when narrowing down your choice to a few top laptop computers.
Costs
Prices of laptop PCs can vary massively, from cheap and cheerful netbooks to the expensive and exclusive Apple MacBook Pro’s.
Tips
Bear in mind that the price advertised is often the price of a base model laptop. If you plan to use your laptop as your main machine, or just want something extra, you will end up spending more money than you may have budgeted for.
Uses
If the laptop is your only computing device, consider the full range of tasks you will need it for – screen size is important for multimedia activities, processing power is important for running high demand tasks and graphics cards (while optional) are essential for playing games.
Tips
– Remember that packages such as Windows Office or anti-virus software are very rarely included in the final price. All of these optional extras come at a price, so plan ahead.
– Be sure to look for specific bargain laptop computers as many stores have long term price reductions on packages.
Portability
Next, you can consider the aspect of portability – if you plan to carry your laptop to the library each day to study or find that the daily commute is enough of a struggle without a bulky bag on your back, consider buying a smaller or more lightweight model.
Connectivity
Wireless connectivity and length of battery life are also extremely important considerations to make at this point. Netbooks are small laptop computers which are designed specifically for light work and internet access.
Multi-tasking and components needed
Think about what you plan to use your laptop for – as with desktop PCs, the more work you plan to do with your laptop the more RAM, memory and processing power the system will need.
Warranties
Finally, consider extended warranties regarding your newly purchased laptop. Laptop components are extremely delicate, and if you plan to carry your laptop around with you all day, chances of them breaking and causing massive damage are increased. What may only be slight damage to any normal desktop PC, such as loss of internal connections, can be cause for an entire new laptop.
Buying a laptop is about planned personal use and portability. Consider what you need your laptop for, and use this to narrow down your choices.
