Refrigerators have come a long way from the old icebox models to sleek, trendy looking designs complete with next generation. This article presents a description of different fridge types and current features from a customer’s perspective.
Top freezer
This is the earliest and most popular model around the world.
Variants typically have a width that ranges between 30-33 inches.
Models such as Comet fridges offer the maximum storage to size ratio and are the least expensive of the lot.
You can easily store the contents of Selfridges hampers in them.
However, their reach-in design makes it tough to access things that are kept at the deep end of the bottom sections.
Bottom Freezer
With the cold storage unit shifted down, these models have the refrigerator shelves at eye level, thus making them a more convenient choice as compared to top freezer models.
Another alternative to this is the French door variant, with smaller side by side, opposite swinging doors.
Available in widths of 30-36 inches, the effective capacity of the fridge is well below the advertised 22-26 cubic-feet mark.
Side-by-side fridge
Great for cramped spaces, the freezer and refrigerator units are separated to either sides of the appliance, thus offering a convenient side-by-side solution.
The additional features include door ice and water dispensers along with temperature controlled bins in some bottle fridges.
However, their narrow doors may be a hindrance when storing or accessing wide components such as pizza boxes.
Built-in
Available in both side-by-side as well bottom freezer styling, built-in fridges are costly installations as they can be customised according to kitchen space as well as your personal choice on the looks department.
You could even buy individual freezer and refrigerators and integrate them into one built in component.
Cabinet depth
Get the look of a built-in but for less with cabinet depth fridges.
Most manufacturers claim their model’s capacity to be 21 cubic feet, but the effective capacity is again a problem here.
These freestanding models will only stick out a bit more than the built-in variants, however, they do provide a wide range of custom designed panels.
Certain models will even present a slim water dispenser.
Conclusion
What type of fridge you want will greatly depend on the budget you set. Nevertheless, start from a side-by-side or bottom-freezer model, moving upwards from there, while keeping within the predefined price range.

Indesit TFAA 10 g: Well designed for its’ purpose, overall size sufficient for my needs; internal design excepted for the year of 2014. could be quirked in the future?Material for trays could be a bit more robust to prevent damage etc. A more colourful arrangement in the containers provided? plain is boring to look at and uninviting to the eye??
