Jerry Reed—country star of the '70s and 80's, songwriter, and occasional film star—died Sunday at the age of 71. Like several country stars of the era known for only for their hit singles, Reed had a successful run behind the scenes as a songwriter and session guitarist, with over 300 to his credit and appearances on records with Elvis Presley, Ringo Starr and Waylon Jennings. Still, Reed is probably...

Country music legend, singer, guitar player, and actor Jerry Reed died today, at 71. I think we all know this one, whether you're a redneck or not: I s'pose most folks not fans of fingerstyle guitar remember him for being Cletus the "snowman" in "Smokey and the Bandit". What most folks DON'T know, is that he was a singer, guitar player, producer, and a songwriter in Nashville for 'round 45 years; writing...

Emphysema, age 71. Smokey and the Bandit may have been near the top of his resume, but how many of you know he authored Elvis' Greatest Shit staple "U.S. Male?" And appeared as himself on Scooby Doo? Scott Soriano forwards...

Image via Wikipedia Jerry Reed passed away today. He was a much better performer than generally recognized. In honor of his passing, here is one of ironic songs. Jerry Reed had a great ear for some of the absurdities of modern life, which he passed on in his country songs. With only a few words, this 2:30 minute song covers corruption, bribery, and the state monopoly on coercion. Listen to the end...

[ LINK ] Jerry Reed has died of emphysema* at the age of 71. You might be thinking of him mostly as a hillbilly singer and goofy actor (Smokey and the Bandit, etc.), but he sure could play the heck out of the guitar. The clip above is with guitar legend Chet Atkins. They recorded 2 or 3 projects together, and it is amazing stuff. Here he is is doing "the City of New Orleans" My favorite guitar player,...

I wouldn't even attempt to count the number of times I watched the boys haul that load of Coors across state lines. Via Yahoo News. Jerry Reed, a singer who became a good ol' boy actor in car chase movies like "Smokey and the Bandit," has died of complications from emphysema at 71.

Jerry Reed, who put so much of the character into Smokey and the Bandit, has died. Pity. I imagine plenty of people will hear East Bound and Down over the next day, and rightfully so; let's not forget, though, that the fellow was a gifted guitar player, as the clip below - a duet with Chet Atkins - shows.

Jerry Reed died on Monday. I am a big Jerry Reed fan. He was a hell of a guitarist, a good songwriter and very funny. My intro to him was as The Bandit in the movie Smokey & the Bandit . Like anyone who grew up with that movie, he was the star. He was funny, he drove a big truck, and he had a cool dog. But also like many folks, I didn't know he played music. It wasn't until I was discovering Chet...

The music in Heaven is a little better today. Mainstream America only knows him for Smokey and the Bandit... or as the football coach in Waterboy... but the truth is the man was a phenom on the guitar. He wrote... at least 20 songs that Chet Atkins recorded... he wrote songs for Elvis... and the all time greats... I mean Clapton.. BB King... Les Paul... They all knew, respected, and loved Jerry. Brad...

Here are two true guitar legends. It's just a shame that more people know Jerry Reed for his role in the Waterboy more than his awesome guitar playing.
