With animation from Jamie Hewlett and music by Damon Albarn, BBC Sport's new campaign for their Olympics coverage is based upon the traditional Chinese folklore tale, Journey to the West by Wu Cheng'en – probably more familiar to UK viewers through its TV incarnation, Monkey Magic!, itself an English language version of the 1970s Japanese show, Saiyūki. In the BBC's trailer, Monkey and the inimatable...

A real treat for you this week. You haven't got me spewing out my usual rubbish here. Far better than that, an old friend of mine has popped up and asked if he could have a go at earworms. Who am I to stand in the way of a polite and perfectly reasonable request like that? Especially not when it comes from a fellow sport lover who is also not averse to dressing up like a tit with his friends at the...

I concur with indents.tv. Olympic promo spots are usually slo-mo footage of athletes in motion, bathed in a golden light with a ribbon or flag or two blowing in the breeze behind them. How about a monkey and a pig...

We're not allowed to see anything from Beijing before the opening ceremony. There was an outcry from Chinese bloggers when South Korean station SBS aired a minute of material shot at one of the rehearsals for the opening ceremony on August 8th. I am surprised - I would thought that snippets and teasers would be the way forward. But the BBC is already sharing from the Chinese capital on Youtube. BBC...

Damon and Jamie team up for a new project for the BBC... You can see from the BBC blog that they get a bit of a mixed reaction from the general audience. For my money it hits the spot, great animation, a touch of nostalgia and a sprinkling of WTF to keep you on your toes. Well done to the BBC for being brave enough to run with this.

After viewing the BBC commercial below for the upcoming Olympics, thinking I'll write to ask for my license fee money back. Don't get me wrong, it get props for being artistic and for drawing inspiration from the host country, but...

The Olympics are only a few days away. I love the Olympics - so many different sports, so many heroes and increasingly more villains. The TV coverage by the BBC is usually excellent and this will be the first to be broadcast in HD. I’m already impressed with the marketing and titles that the beeb [...]

If Olympics TV coverage promos were an official Olympics sport, the BBC would win gold! This is soo much better than the tedious ol' Olympics will be . . . Well done to Damon Albarn, Jamie Hewlett and the BBC team (inspired by the Journey to the West opera)

I saw this when I was having my dinner this evening and thought it was absolutely fantastic. I was pretty sure it was Jamie Hewlet almost from the start, but I didn’t realise the music was by Damon Albarn (for those outside the loop this is the duo responsible for the Gorillaz). I have no interest [...]

I wasn't sure what this was an advert for. Perhaps Albarn's Chinese opera project? Nope, it is the Olympics. There are more details on Monkey at the BBC site . I'm sure I read the tales at school, but all I can remember is the great Japanese tv series . A rebel who escorts a Buddhist monk on a mission, fighting demons and corrupt people on the way. Hmm, I wonder if the BBC will be told off by their...

I love these opening titles that the BBC are using for the Olympics. From the beeb's Olympics blog 'the animation, by Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett - the team behind Gorillaz - twists the tale of the classical Chinese novel "Journey to the West", turning it into a "Journey to the East" and the Beijing Olympics.' If only American TV channels would do something as cool. Sometimes I miss the BBC!! The...

Mixed feelings were expressed about the piece last night in the pub. I kind of like it.
