Iain Gray's Acting Lessons

Often I've suggested Iain Gray, the leader of the Scottish Parliament labour group, has some help with his public speaking. My idea was he may benefit from a few hours at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama but no, Mr Gray's gone one better than our national drama school and he's been taking lessons from Silverfish Productions . The lessons, for which Mr Gray claimed £3,450, trained...

Yes, Mr Gray, that said it all

At FMQs earlier today Labour's Iain Gray pushed the mantra that Alex Salmond is 'losing it', and in evidence cited the SNP's trouncing in last week's Glasgow North East by-election. Indeed, the victor in that contest just happened to be in the Holyrood chamber, and Mr Gray triumphantly said: Willie Bain, Scotland's newest MP, sitting in the public gallery, that says it all. Indeed, Mr Gray. That says...

'Just say no'

Perhaps it was the presence of Willie Bain, smiling wanly in the public gallery, but today's Labour/SNP exchanges at first minister's questions seemed notably antagonistic. Mr Bain, of course, is a living, grinning reminder that Labour thumped the SNP in the Glasgow North East by-election . Today, like an invited Banquo, he hovered over the pre-lunch feast of oratory that is the weekly question session....

FMQs 19 November 2009

Thursday High Noon and as usual Iain Gray was the first to step up to the plate at First Minister's Questions. This week he was concerned with the report that Scotland would have a deeper recession that the remainder of the UK and tried desperately to pin the blame on the First Minister. The FM, after graciously welcoming Willie Bain to the gallery, swept the allegations aside with the counterclaim...

LOL @ MR Mxyzptlk

Mr. Mxyzptlk (Pictured above) Oh hang on a sec, he's over there as well, how the hell did he do that? Anyway Mr Mxyztlk (aka Niko) posted a hilarious comment on my Negative Iain Gray is at it again article today. Now I thought some of the stuff Tavish Scott came out with was funny but compared to what Niko has just written on my blog, well Tavsih is a complete balls up on the old comedy front. Mr....

Scotland's Recession Will Be Worse than the Rest of the UK

According to Strathclyde University's Fraser of Allander Institute, Scotland's recovery from the recession will be much slower than the rest of the UK, as the economy is hit by particularly hard by serious cuts to public spending. The think tanks blames the deeper recession in Scotland mainly on a bigger drop in the output of its financial sector. It is also though that the Scottish economy may confound...

Labour & Tory Fatuous Huzzahs for Prison...

And so, we return to the Criminal Justice & Licensing ( Scotland ) Bill. It’s a hodgepodge of issues and concerns. Issues of sentencing are stacked beside attempts to criminalise serious organised crime, extreme pornography and the trafficking of persons. How old should people be before they are prosecuted? Is 12 years an appropriate threshold? What about the spouses of folk accused of committing...

Iain Gray criticises Alex Salmond for being an MP and MSP (your report, 5 November), yet one of his own MSPs, George Foulkes, is also a an active member of the House o

Liberal Democrat Heaven

The LibDems came nowhere (sixth) in Glasgow North East, and it would be cruel to say that's because they don't have any particularly relevant political policies. But the one thing they are consistently good at is pressing for electoral reform, and STV in particular. They deserve praise for that. I watched the coverage of the Glasgow NE by-election last night on the other STV. Scottish Television's...

The Morning After

So, Labour managed to retain its safest constituency - congratulations to that Bain chap and team Labour. They must be so proud. Of course Labour will be sounding a triumphalist note and of course they will be enjoying their moment of victory for now - particularly as they will need this wee boost ahead of the impending drubbing at the general election next year. I am firmly of the opinion that this...

FMQs 12 November 2009

This week's First Minister's Questions from the Scottish Parliament blog post is over at Spook's place . I've yet to read it but it's bound to be interesting. Does anyone else think Iain Gray has finally taken up my suggestion to have voice lessons? His vocal tone sounds deeper the past few weeks.

Glasgow North East by-election

The seat was vacated by former Commons Speaker Michael Martin, who resigned amid the Westminster expenses row. Voters will go to the polls today to elect one of 13 candidates as an MP. The parties have set a goal to knock on thousands of doors in the constituency, amid predictions turnout on polling day could be crucial to the final result. Labour, which has been the main political force in the Glasgow...
