I've got a piece on Comment is Free suggesting that the minutes of the cabinet meeting held as Lord Goldsmith was making up his mind might be just as interesting. Did Blair string the cabinet along?

Last week I posted on Lord Bingham's observations that the advice given by Lord Goldsmith to Tony Wots His Name about invading Iraq was bogus, hence the invasion was illegal. So it is no surprise to see a rebuttal of this today in the Sunday Telegraph by Alasdair Palmer. However I am glad to see one of the commentators on this piece is wide awake this morning and on the job - Lou Coatney . I would...

Iraq war 'violated rule of law' Former attorney general Lord Goldsmith defended his legal advice Legal advice given to Tony Blair by the attorney general prior to the Iraq war was fundamentally "flawed," a former law lord has claimed. Lord Bingham said Lord Goldsmith had given Mr Blair "no hard evidence" that Iraq had defied UN resolutions "in a manner justifying resort to force". Therefore, the action...

Today’s (20 November 2008) Guardian publishes a letter from me about Lord Bingham’s recent declaration that the attack on Iraq was illegal, and the counter-arguments by Lord Goldsmith, Attorney-General at the time, that it was not. At the time of writing, my letter (and several others on the same subject) are apparently not available [...]

Commenting on Lord Bingham’s description of the invasion of Iraq as a ’serious violation of international law’, and of the advice given to Tony Blair by Lord Goldsmith as ‘flawed’, Liberal Democrat Leader Nick Clegg said: “Lord Bingham’s stature means that his devastating criticism cannot just be brushed under the carpet.” Nick Clegg went on [...]

I wonder if NuLabor's illegal invasion of iraq will come back to haunt them? We now have Lord Bingham saying that the advice given to Tony Wots His Name by Lord Goldsmith was fatally flawed. Making NuLabor's invasion of Iraq "a serious violation of international law" . It would be nice to think someone might pick this up and run with it, but like flying pigs, seeing NuLabor held responsible for any...

Lord Bingham believes there was 'a serious violation of international law and the rule of law' by Britain. But the former Attorney General stands by his advice to Tony Blair in 2003 that military action against Iraq was lawful. And Jack Straw the Lord Chancellor also challenges Lord Bingham's view.

Nothing like a piece of joint-up government: In a written answer to Conservative MP Andrew Rosindell minister Michael Wills said: "A number of Lord Goldsmith's recommendations merit further consideration across Government and will be taken into account in discussion and debate on policy development in these areas. "However, there are no plans to introduce a national day at the present time." Having...

Michael Wills MP, Minister of State for Constitutional Renewal, has indicated that plans for a mooted ‘national day’ have been shelved . Answering a written question from Conservative MP Andrew Rosindell, Wills confirmed that although parts of Lord Goldsmith’s citizenship review would be considered, “there are no plans to introduce a national day at the present time”. Hopefully it is correct to read...
