Everyone knows why China appeals to corporations seeking a site to manufacture their goods -- cheap labour. Coerced labour actually. Chinese workers are spared the burdens of freedom of speech and freedom of association and are, therefore, also spared the burden of forming independent labour unions and negotiating their working conditions. They are at the mercy of their employers. China has labour...

Odd that there hasn't been more attention paid to the Labour parliamentary selection result in Birmingham Ladywood (currently Clare Short's seat, notional Lab majority of 6215 over LD) on Saturday. The new candidate is 27 year old barrister and Oxford graduate, Shabana Mahmood. I gather from people in the West Midlands that she is likely to be a very bright and talented addition to the PLP. I find...

To be quite honest I have found the debate on the Ladywood selection by New Labour tedious in the extreme. How could any one of the candidates bear comparison with Clare Short? The problem is New Labour don't want anyone...

According to Ed Balls writing in the Independent, Labour will make a happy childhood a reality for all Next week they will be nailing jelly to the ceiling of the Houses of Parliament. What Mr Balls is writing is amazingingly similar to his name. He is in fact asking us to accept a greater and greater role in the upbringing of our kids by the state, as us poor parents, are all incapable of doing

Rather amusingly Labour took enough seats of the Liberal Democrats to put Liverpool into No Overall Control. Then this afternoon they signed up an independent Labour councilor and regained control. Bizarre but true. See the BBC here .

I rather under-sold the Lib Dems' success in Butetown. They polled over 40% as a result would have won (just) even without a split between independent and Labour candidate.

I have been told that Butetown is likely to go to the Liberal Democrats. The ward in Cardiff South has recently seen a split between Labour and what you could refer to as "Independent Labour". It looks like the split may have allowed the Lib Dems to come through the middle.

An Independent Labour councillor has joined the Liberal Democrats, tonight, meaning the party has retained its control of Liverpool city Council. The move means that the Liberal Democrats have 46 of the 90 seats in Liverpool. Nadia Stewart decided it was in the city's interest to give the Liberal Democrats an overall majority rather than half the council seats. Liberal Democrat Chief Executive, Lord...

Reacting to the recent report by the Lords Economic Affairs Committee of the strains imposed by immigration, commentators on the BBC, and even members of the Committee such as Clare Short, immediately reached for the role of "Polish plumbers and Polish waiters" in driving down the wages of British workers. This is just the latest example of the unreasonable and ill-informed comment about Polish immigrants...
