Autographs are big: Richard Taylor signing books about the designs for The Chronicles of Narnia Kristin here– Back in the early days of this blog, I posted an entry on our friend Henry Jenkins and his concept of the “aca/fan,” a scholar who studies fandoms while being a fan him- or herself. At that time his book [...]

What's your favourite piece of technology? My multi-room Sonos music system – which consists of small wireless white boxes in each room hooked up to speakers. I control them with a handheld remote so I can pick whichever tracks I want in each room – or have the same heady tones piped throughout my pad! How has it improved your life? As it streams music from my Napster account as well as my own collection,...

Being around 9 months behind everyone else as usual, I'm still reading the Alastair Campbell diaries, which I'll probably eventually post a review of. One of the things that hits you, apart from how unpleasant Campbell is towards anyone who steps so much as an inch out of line, Clare Short being a perennial target, is how much of his time is taken up by the most inane and vacuous garbage which made...

I agree with the sentiment of this post , at least regarding Clare Short, and the article to which it links. I'm not sure 'shifting left' is what needs doing though. What we need to do is expand our repertoire leftwards , and adopt a more left 'utopia' to work towards. Moving the country identifiably leftwards rather than identifiably rightwards (an issue of direction more than position) would do me...

Clare Short has made lots of mistakes in her time - not least not resigning over Iraq. And she was utterly wrong to abandon the Labour whip. Nevertheless, she makes some very salient points re Miliband in today's Independent. She shares my ( widely held) view that Gordon Brown's biggest mistake was not shifting left and sticking with the Blairite agenda. And that Miliband, far from being the answer...

The summer, when parliament closes down and people go on holiday, is famously known as the silly season. New Labour is certainly celebrating it in spectacular style.

Granted this is quite a few days behind other bloggers - working fulltime has left little time (or energy) to blog, but I was very surprised with Blaenau Gwent MP Dai Davies voting against greater scrutiny of MP's expenses and voting for the so called 'John Lewis' list. I had hoped this would be another one of those areas that we would have agreed on. And yes, before anyone chimes in, I know that...

I'm not going to pretend that I was ever a huge fan of Clare Short, but it is interesting that a former key ally of Gordon Brown should be as critical of him as she has just been in an interview with "The Momitor". The former Labour international development secretary said that he is a "control freak" who has done "extraordinarily badly" as prime minister and changed "remarkably little" since moving...
