The Sketch: Hail David, the 42-day wonder

Today David Davis takes the Chiltern Hundreds. We'll miss him. He's a very fine fellow. Great asset to his party in or out of Parliament. He's not a libertarian, by the way, and certainly not a liberal. He's a Constitutional Conservative. Likes history. Maybe he is history. But then who isn't, sooner or later, so good luck to him.

What's DD waiting for?

I pointed out last week that David Davis was still an MP. Expectation this morning was that he would take the Chiltern Hundreds about now to allow the Tories to move the writ this afternoon. But I hear from his...

When Will David Davis Actually Resign?

Has David Davis yet applied for the Chiltern Hundreds (as a means of resigning from the Commons) and has it been granted to him under the seal of the Chancellor of the Exchequer? If these matters had been covered either on Thursday when he made his dramatic announcement or on Friday before the Commons went into its weekend break, then by now they should have been published in the Commons's "Votes...

David Davis: a July quickie

As of 10 minutes ago, DD is still an MP. He hasn't applied for the Chiltern Hundreds, although I'm told that is in hand. On a technical point, he'll have to remember to resign his Crown appointment sharpish, otherwise he'll...

The David Davis Resignation: An Act Of Principle?

Despite being an arch anti-Tory myself, it is difficult not to have some regard for David Davis' decision to apply for Tony Blair's position as Crown Steward and Bailiff of the Chiltern Hundreds, and subsequently then submit himself as a candiate for the ensuing bye-election. Some say it is an act of ego; others an act of principle. I would suggest that it's probably a bit of both. Let's not forget...

David Davis - Hero

In protest at the " monstrosity " of a law passed yesterday, David Davis has taken the Chiltern hundreds saying ...I will fight it, I will argue this by-election, against the slow strangulation of fundamental British freedoms by this government. Now, that may mean I've made my last speech to the House—it's possible. And of course that would be a matter of deep regret to me. But at least my electorate,...

Day 2712: Bye Bye BoJo

Wednesday:BoJo the Clown has officially "taken the Chiltern Hundreds".That's actually just Parliamentary SLANG, the Parliamentary language for saying: "I quit". The Law (by which I mean the Act of Settlement) says that you cannot be an MP and hold an "office of profit" (of which there are two) working for Mrs the Queen. I know that the ACTUAL office of Crown Steward and Bailiff of the Chiltern Hundreds...

What's Left About Green?

Our stance on the climate debate is often assumed - with approval or derision, depending on who's doing the assuming - to reflect a wider Conservative outlook. We wouldn't want people cough > to go around thinking that Climate Resistance is some sort of Conservative reply to Environmentalism. Because it isn't. Steve McIntyre made a similar point after that very amusing voting malarky at last year's...

UK backs ban on Zim cricket tour

Britain said on Tuesday it would support a ban on a tour next year by the Zimbabwe cricket team in protest at President Robert Mugabe's rule, but the decision was up to the sport's authorities. The BBC's Inside Sport said the government was looking at several options to stop next year's tour.
