The bestest film about party conference, ever

It features me of course. Oh and some humans like Nick Clegg, Jo Swinson, Lembit Opik, Lynne Featherstone and Tim Clement-Jones. Woof woof!

Going for bronze

Jo Swinson argues that British Olympians – and their supporters – should have lower expectations: Time after time, psychology has taught us that our happiness is dependent on our expectations. Research from the University of Colorado has shown that bronze medallists, who were often not expecting a medal, were judged happier than the silver medallists expecting the gold. Similar results occur in relation...

Jo Swinson: Backdating road tax is retrograde

Jo Swinson: The proposal to backdate Vehicle Excise Duty, or road tax, will hit the least well-off hardest and give 'green taxes' a bad name

What the MPs really get up to on awaydays..........and other stories from Jo Swinson!

One of the great things about the Blogger's interviews is meeting other bloggers that you feel you have at least got to know a little through their blogs. So I was really pleased to meet Alasdair on Monday when we interviewed Jo Swinson. The adorable Milly, Helen Duffett and her son George were also there. Milly and Alasdair have already covered a lot of what Jo said, so I will just pick up on a few...

Swinson Makes Surbiton Happy

Jo Swinson, MP for East Dunbartonshire, took an unusual tack at the Poppadom and Politics organised by Kingston Liberal Democrats in Surbiton this evening, when she talked about happiness. All too often, she argued, politicians concentrate on GDP rather than people’s sense of well-being. Britain’s GDP has risen three-fold since 1973, but does that mean the [...]

Who Would Want to be an MP?

I'm just about to do the Simon Mayo programme on 5 Live from 3 to 4pm, taking part in a discussion on Who Would Want to be an MP. LibDem MP Jo Swinson, former Labour MP Chris Leslie and Labour candidate Chucca Umanna will be on too. I've always gone from the standpoint that only a very small minority of people go into politics for the wrong reasons, but increasingly I wonder why any sane person puts...

Giving a straight answer the Barbara Follett way

From Hansard : Jo Swinson : To ask the Minister for Women and Equality what proportion of staff at the Women’s National Commission are (a) male, (b) female, (c) black and minority ethnic male and (d) black and minority ethnic female ". Barbara Follett : The Women’s National Commission has a small staff and provision of this information in the categories required would make it possible to identify individuals,...

Bloggers! Would you like to interview Jo Swinson MP?

Jo Swinson, Lib Dem MP for Dunbartonshire East, has agreed to be interviewed by a bunch of Lib Dem bloggers at Westminster on Monday, 21st July at 7 pm. Several mature, erudite interviewers (and their cuddly toys) have already signed up, but there are still a couple of free places in the playpen, oops, panel. It doesn’t [...]

How open were MPs' expenses declarations?

With the committee charged with reviewing MPs' allowances soon delivering its verdict, I was surprised to see on the parliamentary website that a mere ten of our 646 MPs had made submissions to the official consultation. "I was surprised too," agrees Lib Dem MP Jo Swinson, "although I was asked whether I wanted my contribution to be in the public domain. I agreed, because this is an issue about which...

Opinion: Votes at 16

Labour’s Julie Morgan MP had a brave attempt to introduce a Private Members Bill to lower the voting age to 16 talked out by Conservative MPs on Friday. Her Bill was a cross party effort backed by Jo Swinson among others. Regrettably, there were not enough supportive MPs present to force a closure vote (100 [...]

Encouraging younger citizens

Jo Swinson (LibDem) is one of the sponsors of a parliamentary Bill to lower the voting age to 16. More here . This will not necessarily result in higher percentage turnouts, but is the right thing to do for a group of citizens who are almost certainly better informed than their grandparents were. What would improve the democratic process is for the age limit for membership of community councils to...

Nearly late for Downing St photos

I had been booked in to take photos and video this afternoon for Jo Swinson MP handing in a petition to Downing St about a hospice in her constituency. I very nearly forgot to turn up. Well, it be more accurate, I did forget to turn up until I was phoned by Jo's secretary as they were standing at the entrance to Downing St! I made it over in five minutes from Cowley St. Good exercise, as Jo said!

Is Nick Harvey happy being the unacceptable face of Parliament?

One thing that really bugs me is when people who clearly don't know what they are talking about come up with fatuous excuses for not allowing reasonable requests. Nick Harvey MP, sadly, is a case in point. His response to Jo Swinson's reasonable request for Parliament to allow video clips to be posted [...]

Axe Parliament's YouTube ban

Jo Swinson (Liberal Democrat MP for East Dunbartonshire) has launched a campaign to overturn the ban imposed by Parliamentary authorities on putting up footage on YouTube or other video streaming sites. Although MPs are allowed to take footage of the House of Commons in action and put it on their own website, they are not allowed [...]
