The BBC’s Nick Robinson thinks it is in spite of the Labour Government’s official denials. The Lib Dems’ shadow home secretary Chris Huhne wrote here on Lib Dem Voice back in the summer explaining why detaining without trial terrorist suspects for 42 days was wrong both in principle and in practice: Detention without charge for terrorist suspects [...]

Never did I think that I would find myself even partially in agreement with Chris Huhne, the Lib-Dims' spokesman on home affairs. But one must give credit where credit is due and the man is protesting against the arrest of the Holocaust denier, Dr Frederick Toben, at Heathrow. Let us set aside all thoughts of Holocaust denying and the sad individuals who do it (as opposed to the highly regarded writers...

Gosh, this is interesting. In comments which will reignite a row over controversial European Arrest Warrants, Chris Huhne, the Liberal Democrat home affairs spokesman, said that the arrest of Dr Fredrick Toben at Heathrow on Wednesday conflicted with Britain’s tradition of free speech. Mr Huhne said the affair exposed weaknesses in the system and called on the [...]

Dear Chris Huhne, Since losing the Lib Dem leadership contest, you have settled into an effective role as Home Affairs spokesman for the party and fought hard for civil liberties. Admittedly this rarely gains you a frontpage slot but it is commendable nonetheless. I am delighted to see that this morning you are standing up for [...]

Lib Dem MP Chris Huhne is calling on the courts not to extradite an alleged Holocaust denier to Germany on an EU arrest warrant. Australian Dr Gerald Toben was arrested in transit at Heathrow at the request of Germany, who’s laws make it a criminal offence to deny or play down the Holocaust. [...]

Chris Huhne has decided to speak out against the man arrested for holocaust denial in the UK when it is not a crime here, which I wrote about a few days ago. I'm glad that someone has joined UKIP's Nigel Farage in speaking out against it (not that any press bothered to publish that) but there is a large dollop of hypocrisy which we have come to expect from the Liberal Democrats British courts should...

While I certainly do not agree with what he said I certainly beleive that it is important for a free society that he be allowed to say it. The use of the EU arrest warrant to stifle free speech and bring all the EU members down to the lowest common denominator of censorship is just wrong and for once I agree with Chris Huhne on this. While stressing that he was completely opposed to anti-semitism,...

Its not often that this blog comes rushing to the defence of Lib Dem spokespersons, but Chris Huhnes deserves praise and highlights the vast problems of the EU wide arrest warrant.Dr Toben is an Australian citizen who not only denies the holocaust but also publishes his denials online. Toben has never committed a crime in Germany, but on the basis that his Austrians based website site could be accessed...

I don't usually like defending Liberal Democrat spokesmen but this headline on the BBC website about Chris Huhne is utterly misleading : Holocaust denier gets MP backing Obviously if he backed a Holocaust denier then he would be unfit for office, but of course that is not what he has done, he has simply made it clear that he regards free speech as being for everyone even if you disagree with them....

Well done to Chris Huhne , Lib Dem shadow home secretary, for opposing the extradition of Gerald Toben to Germany: The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), acting for the German authorities, argues that agreements signed in 2003 between the UK and other European countries mean that Britain is duty-bound to assist the German authorities. But Mr Huhne, a former MEP, told BBC Radio 4's Today Programme that...

When I read the headline that a Lib Dem MP is backing the rights of a holocaust denier not to be arrested and extradited from the UK to Germany, I was somewhat concerned. But when I read the full details, it is clear Chris Huhne is right. It is a fact that holocaust denial is not a crime in this country so it cannot be right to to arrest someone in this country for doing something that is not illegal....

Earlier today I received the following letter from Chris Huhne, Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary which I know will interest some of you: Last week Jacqui Smith unveiled the design for Labour’s ridiculous ID card scheme, which will be given to foreign nationals as early as November. The Government are aware of how unpopular this policy is with the [...]

I supposed he was going to get selected eventually for somewhere, and finally it has happened. Conor Burns, the Conservative candidate vanquished by Chris Huhne at the last General Election in Eastleigh, has finally found himself another constituency to stand in - Bournemouth West. What I find interesting though is the local candidate dimension. There has [...]
