Siobhain McDonagh MP, Mictham & Morden, UK, during the Labor Party conference held Thursday appealed to the delegates, and to the millions of live TV viewers, to shoulder their own commitment on the Sri Lanka issue, urging that a boycott of goods and avoiding holidays in the unsavory state would ensure their money would not prop up that government.

Tom Watson MP , the "former minister for digital engagement", which beats "artist formerly known as Prince" into a cocked-hat, has a fascinating piece in the Independent about the way in which the limitations of the Lobby inhibit reporting of the detail of Parliamentary. This is the last few paragraphs, which is the most interesting part: Driven by the decreasing space allocated...

Tom Watson has written a provocative article in the Independent on Sunday which, among other things, calls for the reform of the lobby system. He makes the very valid point that lobby journalists ignore most of what goes on in Parliament. Not a single national newspaper now has a page, or even half a page, reporting parliamentary proceedings. Watson writes... I laughed in disbelief when told on my...

Before we move on, three points about the meeting of the Parliamentary Labour Party on Monday that marked the end of the attempted coup. 1. Was that not the first time a ministerial reshuffle was divided into three parts? The Cabinet was announced on Friday, ministers of state (middle-ranking ministers) on Monday, before the PLP meeting, and parliamentary under-secretaries (junior ministers) on Tuesday....

My previous comment saluting the bravery of the comrades that have told the truth about Gordon Brown's leadership included a partial roll call of Labour MPs who have done so publicly. I promised a fuller list, so here it is. However, it is still not comprehensive, and there are complications. One is, for example, how to classify assorted flavours of the hard left, whose guiding principle is to be opposed...

From Hansard , obviously enough: Mr. Dai Davies: To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what reports he has received on whether the plutonium production reactor at Yonbyong in North Korea was based on the published blueprints of the first generation Magnox reactors developed by the UK Atomic Energy Authority; Bill Rammell: We do not know whether the Democratic People's Republic...

Obviously I exclude from my friend's strictures about " a truly pathetic bunch of jellies " the following: James Purnell, Jane Kennedy, Siobhain McDonagh,* Frank Field, Jim Dowd, Kate Hoey, Charles Clarke, David Winnick , Nick Raynsford, Graham Allen, Barry Sheerman, and Tom Harris. Harris has just blogged on what he said to the Prime Minister at tonight's meeting of the Parliamentary Labour...

Siobhain McDonagh, the Labour MP who triggered the attempted coup against Brown last autumn, has said support expressed by Cabinet ministers for Gordon Brown did not reflect their privately held views: I know that some of the Cabinet that have expressed that view don't believe it in private. People have to decide about making a stand. I think James Purnell has been awfully brave and honest. I do not...

Siobhain McDonagh has sent me a letter as one of her constituents, to explain her resignation. She believes we need a change of leadership (no suprises there). What is notable is a particular comment in her letter: "Times have changed and the Labour party has to find answers to the questions being asked in 2008, not 1998." Now, the Blairite tendency has been saying that we need to get in...

What is it about Labour’s women and Gordon? A striking feature of the mini-rebellion that started only a week ago last Friday was the preponderance of woman who came out in support of the move by Siobhain McDonagh - the government whip whose resignation got the ball rolling. That’s been continued with the replies today of a [...]

How can the rebellion progress without a cabinet minister? It seems to have been going on much longer but it is less than a week since Siobhain McDonagh (above) decided to put her job on the line in order to make Brown’s leadership an issue in the countdown to the Labour conference in Manchester in a [...]
