Low-paid women across the country - are having to fight long and hard just to achieve equal pay with their male counterparts - but seldom with the active support of their MPs. At the same time, some women MPs - in privileged, well paid positions - insist on making fools of themselves on the subject of MPs' expenses. The latest is Helen Goodman - the Works and Pensions Minister earning £96,000...

This excerpt is from a Times columnist who has, triggered by the ongoing saga of British MPs and their expenses, arrived at the idea that far fewer are needed. If that happens here, great. Unfortunately one of our main offenders is one of the MPs we do need. At least he has apologised and, for what it's worth, I think it was sincere. Another political female who is comically out of touch on such matters...

Pudgy lefty columnist Johann Hari in the ‘Indy’ considers the Tory Party to be ‘out of touch’ with voters: The most common complaint against David Cameron is unfair and untrue. Critics keep charging that he has no policies – but in truth, now he has dropped his early attempt at kum-bay-ya Conservatism , Cameron is offering a fairly detailed prospectus. Unfortunately, it...

Sir Christopher Kelly has called this week for a ban on MP’s claiming cleaning expenses. However, the Work and Pensions Minister, Helen Goodman, has responded by suggesting that this would disadvantage female ministers, as more females than males usually undertake family cleaning, and that women would be put off standing for Parliament. What are your thoughts? Do you manage [...]

The other day I came across a fascinating little episode in political history via the Wikipedia entry on Ruth Dalton , wife of the Labour chancellor. That entry links to the Commons maiden speech by Helen Goodman in 1997: It is an honour to be the first woman MP for Bishop Auckland, and that honour belongs to Ruth Dalton, who took the seat in a by-election in 1929. Her husband, the then MP for Peckham,...

When do we want it? Whenever our kids pick up an iPod in a store : A mum is furious after her ten-year-old girl was exposed to pornographic images after picking up an iPod in a shop at Lakeside. Helen Goodman, 37, said her daughter, Eleanor, was left shocked after innocently looking at an iPod Touch on display at the Apple store. The iPod Touch comes pre-loaded with free pr0n now? Wow, Apple don’t...

How can you tell if your MP is lying to you? Safest just to assume they are, because no matter what they say to you, or even commit to in writing, when it comes to a vote in the House of Shame they'll just meekly do what they are told. Here's the proof. Eighty-two Labour MPs signed three Parliamentary motions, dating back to 2005, opposing the Extradition Act and sending Gary McKinnon to the U.S. for...

Oink oink oink the Rt. Hon. Sow claims taxpayers cash for china..... The MP for Bishop Auckland was elected in May 2005 and initially stayed in hotels when in her constituency in Co Durham. But at the end of August 2005 she booked a stone holiday cottage called Bide-a-Wee in the picturesque village of Romaldkirk. Miss Goodman submitted a claim of £519.31 to the House of Commons fees office for...

Paul Waugh speculates that Gordon Brown might have had his very own version of Chris Galley, leaking to him from the Treasury. He identifies Labour MP Helen Goodman as a former suspect in a Treasury leak enquiry. She once worked in the Treasury for Ken Clarke. Paul writes... It turns out that Government whip Helen Goodman was a former Treasury civil servant who was - wait for it - once a prime suspect...

Liar and Loser Helen Goodman , the Liebour MP for Bishop Auckland, in her preamble to an attack on the patriotic and ever growing British National Party , first took a swipe at two of its members - Adam and Mark Walker who have both been persecuted because of their political believes saying ; But this is typical of the crazy lies and false victimhood adopted by the far right: wrongly...

Looks like some campaigns to get politicians to change stupid ideas eventually work. At least in Britain. In a letter to the deputy leader of the House of Commons Helen Goodman, who had raised concerns over publishers’ proposals with the Department for Children, Schools and Families, Balls said that his officials had met with publishers’ representatives [...]
