ROBERT Kilroy-Silk was once the MP for Knowsley. His departure from that position was not mourned and he was succeeded by the popular George Howarth, who is now a privy councillor, who strangely enough was opposed in a bye-election by Rosemary Cooper who was then a Liberal and is now Labour MP for West Lancashire.

"Hostilities are over," Labour rebel George Howarth tells visitors to his website in a follow up statement to remarks he made at Monday's meeting of Labour MPs: " The polls suggest that the public increasingly recognise Labour's leadership has the right experience to respond to the crisis while the Conservatives have no solutions and nothing to say. It is right to respond by focusing on the challenges...

The BBC UK politics homepage is as unbiased as ever. The top news story is that "Brown critic 'ends hostilities' - One of Gordon Brown's leading critics, backbench MP George Howarth, says his campaign for a Labour leadership contest is over" This gives the BBC a chance to have as subsidiary articles: "Who's who in new cabinet, No time for a novice, says Brown and PM defiant over leadership talk" The...

George Howarth, who a few weeks ago evoked memories of Hitler and Chamberlain to describe why Gordon Brown had to go, called a halt to hostilities at last night at the Parliamentary Labour Party meeting. Brownite MPs are full of it this morning. "We've seen it off," says one. Another grabbed me as I walked out of the Palace of Westminster last night and began: "I never spin, but that meeting was amazing....

We have now reached the slightly surreal stage in the attempt to unseat the Prime Minister of discussing the etiquette of rebellion. Over at Coffee House James Forsyth argues that George Howarth's disobliging remark that G. Brown is the most unpopular Prime Minister since Neville Chamberlain is counter-productive because it could generate a pro-Brown backlash. It's far ...

The BBC’s Nick Robinson analyses Miliband’s ‘Kremlinology gone crazy’ dismissal of the motivations of the MPs involved in this weekend’s shennanighans against Gordon Brown. Strangely, it’s not yet been picked up that two of the conspirators - George Howarth and Janet Anderson - received personal plaudits from Tony Blair in his 2006 leaving speech for their loyalty. Clearly there is more to this than...
