Private Members Bills for 2009/10 Session

The list of the 20 successful backbench MPs who have an opportunity to bring forward a private members bill was published last week. In view of the fact that this will be a short session, few are likely to get their bills completed. In a normal session 13 Fridays are set aside for consideration of Private Members Bills. A Factsheet on the success of 'PMBs' can be found here . We should know shortly...

A Wet Weekend

My lack of presence recently is due to lots of crazyness at work. In the last month I have worked until 9pm 6 nights, stayed away at a conference for 2 nights, been out of the office for 4 days and I have just got back from a 3 day trip to London with three of our Young Carers. Phew. What a busy old month! I was a bit aprehensive before going to London, it being my friest trip away with them by myself...

`ccfon' A coalition of ‘faith groups’, human rights campaigners, trade unions and other secular organisations, met in the House of Commons on Tuesday, 24 November, to call on Parliament to remove what it calls ‘religious opt-outs’ from the Equality Bill. The coalition, which called itself the Cutting Edge Consortium (CEC), was chaired by Clare Short MP and [...]

Daytripper

Beautiful weather in Bristol today, bit chilly but lovely and sunny. I, however, am on the train on the way to London, so the weather is a tad annoying because I'll miss the campaigning today and it's bound to pour down for our session on Sunday. (As an aside: one of the arguments that people put for PR is that in seats with 'healthy' majorities, voters get taken for granted. To those people I'd say...

An Evening with Montgomeryshire farmers.

Back to my keyboard after two days in Cardiff. Been to the Annual Meeting of the Montgomeryshire NFU tonight at Maesmawr Hall, the scene of Edward and Karen's wedding three years ago. Guest speaker was the National Assembly's Director of Rural Affairs, Rory O'Sullivan . He was standing in for the Minister, and she'd have been proud of him. As delphic as ever when necessary. After an excellent meeting,...

Letters: Honduras warning for Latin America

Latin America faces the greatest threat to its democracy in decades (International, 7 November). The military coup that overthrew elected president Manual Zelaya and seized power in Honduras in June is now seeking to legitimise its illegal government through the international recognition of elections on 29 November. Such recognition would give a green light to opponents of democracy throughout the...

Scientists target Canada over climate change

Prominent campaigners, politicians and scientists have called for Canada to be suspended from the Commonwealth over its climate change policies. The coalition's demand came before this weekend's Commonwealth heads of government summit in Trinidad and Tobago, at which global warming will top the agenda, and next month's UN climate conference in Copenhagen. Despite criticism of Canada's environmental...

The Cutting Edge Consortium and Christian opt-outs to the Equality Bill

From coffee with Davis Mac-Iyalla at London Bridge I went to Committee Room 5 in the House of Commons, meeting Revd Tina Beardsley, CA trustee, in the security queue. We were there for the launch meeting of the Cutting Edge Consortium chaired by Clare Short MP. The meeting discussed the religious exemptions to the legislation on sexuality and gender identity in the Equality Bill. The presence of the...

In praise of Clare Short

She said today , of the Iraq inquiry , which opens tomorrow: "I don't think it will satisfy people who are hoping to hang, draw and quarter Tony Blair, or refer him to the International Court — that's not going to happen." Always had a lot of time for her. Photo: The Mirror

Security 'cover-up' at nuclear plants

Ministers refuse to release details of five incidents last year The government is refusing to provide details on five separate security breaches at Britain's nuclear power stations last year. The breaches have prompted accusations that ministers are suppressing damaging information at a time when they are attempting to sell the idea of more nuclear power stations. Earlier this month, 10 new sites...

Review: BBC Question Time, 19th November 2009

Phil Woolas (ZaNuLiebour) lamented the failure of Tony Blair to land the European Empire gig but is sure Emperor von Rumpy-Pumpy will do a good job. Droned on and on about expenses and the budget deficit. Our Rating: Said nothing that we wanted to listen to and said way too much. 0/12 Clare Short (Independent, ex-Labour) said that Tony Blair never had a chance of the EU gig because he is
