Who's spinning?

The tories are continuing to row with British Airways, perhaps happy to show that, unlike Labour, they are not in the pocket of big business. Today Theresa Villiers is accusing BA chief executive Willie Walsh of spinning the figures over the impact of a high speed rail link. Walsh had said the tories were all over the place on aviation policy. Villiers says: “We are not all over the place on aviation...

Conservatives want high speed rail not expanded Heathrow

Britain’s Conservative Party would scrap plans for expansion at Heathrow Airport and build a new high-speed rail link between London and the north of England instead, an official of the party commented on Monday. The Conservatives’ transport spokeswoman, Theresa Villiers, emphasized that an investment of GBP20 billion pounds on a high-speed rail line would make [...]

Still a lack of coherant Tory policy talk: Conference Special by Garbo

Theresa Villiers’ transport policy announcement on rejecting a third runway at Heathrow and instead building high speed rail, as you may have gathered, has not gone down well with me at all! For some reason the Tories are linking high speed rail with Heathrow expansion when the two are unrelated. The Tories say [...]

Has she saved her job?

Westminster Village has been awash with rumours that Theresa Villiers is due for the chop in Cameron’s approaching reshuffle. Along with Peter Ainsworth who is apparently wounded and bloodied from battles with Alan Duncan’s BERR shadow team and incredibly the brilliant David Willetts, Ms Villiers has been rumoured to be reshuffled out of the Shadow Cabinet for some time. Tory and Labour MPs concede,...

Leading article: A new airport on the Thames may be the answer for London

Those who have been following the evolution of Conservative Party policy under David Cameron might have sensed the way the wind was blowing, but yesterday's announcement still came as a surprise. Addressing the party conference in Birmingham , the shadow Transport Secretary, Theresa Villiers, pledged that a Conservative government would tear up plans for a third runway at Heathrow airport and use...

Runway To Be Replaced By Rail?

The Tories have something different in mind for the proposed third runway at Heathrow: scrapping it in favour of high speed trains . Transport spokeswoman Theresa Villiers confirmed this morning at the Conservative Party Conference "that a Conservative government would say no to a third runway at Heathrow." The theory is that trains are greener than planes and will thus help cut carbon emissions....

Theresa Villiers is right, and Boris is a fruit cake

I picked up the Guardian at Bickley station this morning to see the article at the bottom of the front page: Tories plan £20bn 180mph rail link instead of Heathrow third runway I was stunned to read that the Conservatives are proposing exactly what I have supported for a long time. But as James Graham highlights, Greenpeace have said: "The true test of their commitment will come when, like the

Conservatives Commit To Manchester Rail Link

I couldn’t blog today without briefly mentioning the new Conservative commitment to a high-speed rail link to Manchester and other northern cities: Theresa Villiers has laid out plans to introduce the next phase of high speed rail to the UK, in what she described as a “momentous step forward for Britain’s transport infrastructure”. A Conservative Government would [...]

REASONS NOT TO VOTE CONSERVATIVE...

The Conservatives would scrap plans for a third runway at Heathrow and instead build a £20 billion high speed rail line between London and Leeds, it emerged today. Shadow transport secretary Theresa Villiers said that the Conservatives wanted to cut more than 66,000 flights a year at the west London airport. Rather than building a third runway, they would install an entirely new railway line running...

Telegraph Column: Cameron's Reshuffle Dilemmas

My Telegraph column today looks at how David Cameron may reshuffle his Shadow Cabinet once Gordon Brown has completed his own reshuffle. The main guesses predictions are... Edward Garnier to become Shadow Attorney General Ed Vaizey to replace Peter Ainsworth at Environment Theresa Villiers to move from Transport Greg Clark to replace David Willetts at Innovation, Universities & Skills Maria Miller...

Yes, I admit it, I agree with Labour

Dear Theresa Villiers, Your below-par performance as Shadow Transport Secretary has left you very vulnerable should David Cameron decide to reshuffle his cabinet. Justine Greening has outshone you at every opportunity. I was almost feeling sorry for you, but after reading about your opposition to road pricing this morning in the Telegraph, I am more than [...]

MP takes up arms in House of Commons

According to recent raw copy: Shadow Transport Secretary Theresa Villiers has taken up arms on behalf of the road haulage industry in the House of Commons. I do hope that's a metaphorical rather than literal taking up of arms (although others may not be of the same opinion). I changed it – just because it threw me on first read. I wonder how common it is to use 'take up arms' metaphorically...
