The idea of curfews on young people is back with a vengeance. It is rapidly getting caught up with the current concern about knife crime. The Sunday Times this morning says: A report from a House of Commons committee will say this week that a national curfew on young teenagers could curb anti-social and violent behaviour. I suppose such a curfew would have that effect. And if you included older teenagers...

Whatever your stance on the campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan, no one can doubt the courage of our young soldiers, sailors, airmen and airwomen who fight there. Thank God that we have got youngsters like these who are prepared to do the brutal and bloody work that ultimately keeps us safe in our beds.

The Association of European Journalists (AEJ), being an intrinsically pro-European assemblage of hacks, does not normally celebrate Waterloo Day, but it was fitting that our guest for lunch at the European Parliament’s offices in Westminster today made reference to this military anniversary. Patrick Mercer, Conservative MP for Newark and Retford, served for 25 years in the [...]

The Mirror carries a story that Brown's 42 days detention proposals are flawed because suspects cannot be held for that length of time either in police cells or in overcrowded high security prisons (where suspects would be in solitary confinement, no doubt). Despite Patrick Mercer's deep misgivings based on his personal experience of detention without trial in Northern Ireland, it seems the government...

When it comes to defence the Tories are being found out one by one. Patrick Mercer's shameful efforts to win over the hearts and minds of suspicious Tory colleagues following his flirtation with New Labour are plain to see. Add to that the disgraceful behaviour of the 'Tory generals' forced to apologise after they used a widely publicised House of Lords debate to demand more spending on the

The Register of Members Interests doesn't say how much military security company, Blue Hackle, pays Tory MP Patrick Mercer. Maybe Patrick is offering his services out of the goodness of his heart? Either way, I hope he's more consistent in his role as a private advisor to Blue Hackle than he is as a self-appointed Tory defence expert. Richard North, Defence of the Realm blog: "So there it is,
