I missed two dinners on Friday night (for Birkenhead Conservatives with Nigel Evans MP and for Manchester Conservatives with Edward Timpson MP). Instead, I went to a pre-conference dinner organised by Leasowe Community Homes with Frank Field MP at the Jury’s Inn on the ‘new’ waterfront in Liverpool. The residents’ conference was for board members and tenants [...]

There's always someone in the world in a snit about alcohol. Currently it's British MPs Nigel Evans (Conservative) and John Grogan (Labour) complaining that Skol beer is being sold for less than Evian water as Asda supermarkets. I'm not entirely opposed to the idea of regulating alcohol promotions (such as free drinks specials in bars), given that alcohol can cause social problems. However, I'm not...

Funding for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a severe muscle wasting disease that affects boys and young men, was discussed in Parliament this week. Nigel Evans, MP for Ribble Valley, raised the issue of 'ring-fenced' funding for research into treatments and a cure for Dunchenne Muscular Dystrophy and called for more localised specialist care for boys and young men living with the condition.

The Olympics should be permanently based in Greece to stop politics interfering in the Games, a Lancashire MP has said. Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans has urged the International Olympic Committee to hold every Games in Olympia. The suggestion comes amid the continued chaos surrounding the Beijing 2008 Olympic torch relay. Mr Evans said: "The current system will always bring problems relating to the...

I've just read a rather intersting Early Day Motion from Ribble Valley MP, Nigel Evans. In his EDM, no 1136 , he makes a rather good point about the money spent on meals. According to his figures 70p is spent per pupil in schools, £3 per patient in hosptials, but a whopping £12 is spent on each prisoner's meals. If these figures are accurate then that pretty much stinks. Is it any wonder that wonder...

I agree with both Madsen Pirie and Nigel Evans. It's going to be May 2010 before there's an election. Here's my reasoning: Gordon Brown is a cautious man. He's not just one who plans long and carefully; that would be admirable. Instead he's one who goes into a tizzy when things don't go exactly to plan. His bottling out of an autumn election at the last minute was characteristic. It wasn't George...

The ASI's Next Generation group hit the ground running with its first reception of 2008. It was first Tuesday time, and Nigel Evans, MP (Con) for Ribble Valley was the guest of honour. There was a good crowd, probably attracted more by the speaker than the wine of the month (Wilga Tree shiraz-cabernet). After the members had sampled the gourmet sandwiches, it was time for the 10-minute presentation....

My good friend Nigel Evans, MP for Ribble Valley, and one of the most effective Parliamentarians has already won this week’s prize for the most entertaining speech in Parliament during the Queen's Speech debate. During Nigel's speech, he took an intervention from the (excellent) Scottish Labour MP Michael Connarty. As Nigel was responding to this intervention a fly [...]

The political prospects for Adam Rickitt have, for some reason, been the subject of much blogster speculation over the last couple of years. Pendennis in the Observer believes his political career may be dead due to him making a "hand shandy" sign behind Nigel Evans MP's back at a House of Commons' photocall. Actually, surely this should increase the lad's political chances shouldn't it.....
