Having taken a pass on political blogging, and trying to read about politics, for about a month, the anti-Russian ranting emanating from Edward Lucas yesterday and Malcolm Rifkind today in the 'Daily Telegraph' is thoroughly depressing. If one wished, one could spend all day performing word-by-word, line-by-line fisks of this rubbish; however, having wasted far too may hours of my life in such exercises...

It seems to me that former British Defence Secretary Sir Malcolm Rifkind's views on the subject are much more sensible than those of former U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld .

Sir Malcolm Rifkind was British Foreign Secretary, 1995-97. He writes in the Telegraph: Where China has been unreservedly impressive is in comparison to Russia. No one buys anything from Russia apart from oil, gas and various minerals. Hydrocarbons account for three quarters of Russia's exports and half of government revenues. ...

“Mad” Nick Cohen has a strange Grauniad piece on Tory isolationism, including an excellent anecdote about Scots Tory (remember them') Malcolm Rifkind during the Yugoslavian comedy of the early 1990s: Aides to Dole and McCain told him that Rifkind, whose experience of combat was limited to the backstabbing of the Scottish Conservative party, cried: ‘You Americans [...]

I was interested to see Ken Clarke's proposals for reform of the current unfair treatment of England as a result of Labour's badly thought through devolution acts. Both Ken and Malcolm Rifkind have made some interesting points - basically they propose that where legislation only affects England (or only affects England and Wales), a majority for the details will be required among MPs representing constituencies...

David Simpson MP, MLA, Craigavon Councillor, “successful businessman” and last, but not least, Gospel Singer (at least that’s what it says here ) is not a happy Duper : Not so long ago Malcolm Rifkind came up with proposals broadly similar to Mr. Clarke’s and the fundamental arguments against them remain the same. I was elected to serve as a member of the Parliament of the United Kingdom at Westminster....

I see Ken Clarke's half baked proposals to resolve the West Lothian question are now officially announced . I'll leave you to follow the link and read just how dire and convoluted they really are. Sadly, the only response from the Tory side appears to be from Sir Malcolm Rifkind . Alas, even though he is unimpressed, his solution is simply a refinement of the same half baked idea. When will these cretins...

When will the Conservatives get it ? Last autumn Malcolm Rifkind, after months of deliberation, came up with a half-baked plan to deal with the West Lothian Question. At its core was the idea of a Grand Committee (a sub committee of Parliament, more like) to discuss English-only matters. At best it went about halfway to addressing the imbalance created by devolution for Scotland, Wales and Northern...

ConservativeHome has an interesting piece on the Big Beasts of the Tory Party not in the Shadow Cabinet. They include IDS, DD, Ken Clarke, Malcolm Rifkind and John Redwood. They speculate about which of these might be included in a Cameron Cabinet. My bet is none of them will. But this does raise the question of David Cameron's priorities as PM. Does he want a Cabinet of the biggest beasts possible,...

Malcolm Rifkind on the Irish No vote in a European Affairs discussion last week. I have highlighted the most important point which is that the No Vote may delay the ratification of the treaty beyond the length of the current Labour Government. The Conservatives will then be free to put the Lisbon Treaty to a Referendum. We can only hope this is true and the public can have their promised vote.
