After a turbulent 500 years it is understandable – I sometimes feel like putting my feet up too – but it is a mistake It's not true that last night's appointments at the EU's Brussels conclave are without historic precedence. When the Italian politician Signor Caligula was president of the European commission during one of the continent's more dynamic phases he appointed his horse to negotiate...

Now that Blair is out of the picture Brown is pushing Baroness Ashton to be EU Foreign Minister . I really hope that this is merely a bargaining position so that the UK gets to keep a key economic brief in the Commission (i.e. Trade). Even if it is, its bloody embarrassing. What makes Ashton a good candidate? Lets take a brief look at her CV. 1998 - 2001 - Chaired the Hertfordshire Health Authority...

Back from training EU officials in Mediation techniques, with an eye on the role of mediation at the international level. One of our role-play examples featured an attempt by an imaginary Head of Mission in an imaginary country trying to mediate between his Deputy and a younger Political Officer over how best (if at all) to report back to HQ rumours of unrest in that country on the eve of an important...

Kim Howells's call for a unilateral withdrawal from Afghanistan is superficially appealing but profoundly wrong Kim Howells's call for an early, total withdrawal of our military forces from Afghanistan will strike a chord with many people, especially after the sad news today of five more British soldiers having lost their lives. While I understand his views and respect his arguments, I believethat...

Senior politicans and former defence chiefs form Top Level group to promote cause of nuclear disarmament A cross-party group of senior politicans joined former defence chiefs today to promote the cause of nuclear disarmament, an issue they described as critical but too often ignored. They launched the Top Level group of parliamentarians, including former foreign and defence secretaries from both main...

Wednesday 28 October 2009 Dear Malcolm Rifkind, Regarding the company ' Paypal ' I have been caused a great deal of distress on several occasions by the maladministration of Paypal- this is not unique to me and horrific practices by Paypal is widely reported, Paypal has a banking licence (since May this year apparently)it routinely withholds funds illegally, for example a buyer will purchase from 'Ebay'...

On Thursday, students from across the UK travelled to Westminster for the ASI’s Independent Seminar on the Open Society. Sir Malcolm Rifkind opened the seminar, discussing the UK’s relationship with the EU and convincingly arguing that the UK’s approach to European integration should be flexible and based upon our national interest. Following this was Brendan O’Neill , who...

David Miliband has come out to state that "British interests would have been harmed, perhaps badly" if Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi had been allowed to die in a Scottish jail. Of course we know that it's a nasty old world, but this is pretty cynical even by Westminster's elevated standards. Nothing, you'll note, of humanity; just hard cash. Nice. Then of course in the Commons, the tame...

A humorous but, in my view, misguided analogy in Andrew's latest 'Whatever' column, in which he criticises what he sees as militant atheism: I don't follow cricket either, but as long as cricket fans don't threaten me with bats, we can bump along without incident This gives the strong impression that Dawkins, Hitchens et al are 'protesting too much', as if they are writing their impassioned tomes...

While Conservatives remain divided on Europe, an idea that has outraged many could be good news for Cameron It wasn't intended to happen this way, and perhaps it wasn't even intended to happen at all, but the Conservative party is undergoing a political reality check over Europe at its conference in Manchester. For the first time since they were driven from office in 1997, the prospect of power is...

There are persistent rumours that the European Union has bought the Irish off and that the result tomorrow is a foregone conclusion... they will vote Yes! That means that only the Czechs can possibly derail the New World Order and that is hardly likely. The New World Order has planned this for a very long time. Tony Blair is their boy, bought and paid for, so it is hardly likely that we can derail...

I read, with a great deal of interest, O’Neill’s post on English nationalism , which examines a speech by David Wildgoose, from the Campaign for an English Parliament, delivered to the Liberal Democrat conference. He begins by quoting Arthur Aughey, who has observed that English nationalism is ‘a mood, not yet a movement’. It is a useful distinction. There exists, fairly commonly...
