The Whip (but no longer the Chief) is back, along with a monkey. The Chief Whip is to be welcomed back to the political blogosphere here in South Tyneside, however he has to demote himself to a plain whip because WordPress will not allow the re-use of his old title. We are told that The Chief [...]

Star wows them in South Shields park Click the picture to enlarge Lulu is probably the biggest star so far to grace the stage at the Bents Park in South Shields and we really ought to congratulate South Tyneside Council and it’s events team for being able to attract such a high calibre artist to kick off [...]

The indignities Her Maj has to suffer : " New Zealand shopkeepers are being fleeced by fake 100 dollar notes featuring a sheep wearing a tiara in the place where Queen Elizabeth's portrait should be. Police said the notes, which all bear the same serial number, were crude forgeries but some merchants in Rodney, near Auckland, where they were circulating, were taken in ". And here is the note in question...

Whenever I get a comment with a name next to it, it tends to be someone who is interested, and wants a discussion. Mostly they are positive comments. Whenever my email alerts me to an "anonymous" blog comment that has come through for acceptance/ moderation, it tends to be a very similar comment to other anonymous comments on other blogs, as if there is an army of people who deliberately trawl blogs...

Does Geoff Hoon (left) know what he is doing? A new matter arises following the fiasco of his letter to Keith Vaz - never mind his earlier role as Minister of Defence during the invasion of Iraq. As explained here , why will Glasgow East be without an MP for over 10 weeks after its bye-election? It is now confirmed that the vote will take place on 24 July, following the issuing of the parliamentary...

MSN report that: "The last major remnant of Saddam Hussein's nuclear program — a huge stockpile of concentrated natural uranium — reached a Canadian port Saturday to complete a secret U.S. operation that included a two-week airlift from Baghdad and a ship voyage crossing two oceans. The removal of 550 metric tons of "yellowcake" — the seed material for higher-grade nuclear enrichment — was a significant...

The establishment love-in with Sharia Law continued apace. Following from the Archbishop of Canterbury in February we have had two more examples in the last week. First Lord Chief Justice - Lord Phillips , the most senior judge in England and Wales, said there was no reason sharia law's principles could not be used in mediation and then Stephen Hockman QC the former chairman of the Bar Council said...

I don't know when exactly it was, but at some point in the past few months, I forgot that Amy Winehouse was a real, 24-year-old girl from South London - and started to think she was a cartoon. She's joined some notional Public Figures Cartoon Network in my head - along with Boris Johnson, Hunter S. Thompson and Keith Richards. You know what I mean, don't you? When Keith Richards fell out of that coconut...

South Tyneside Labour Leader cosies up to media I can confirm for the Monkey (or was it the Whip?) that South Tyneside Council’s Labour Leader Iain Malcolm has been having cosy chats with the local media here in South Shields, in fact he spent half of this afternoon at it (whilst playing dad). Unfortunately it was not [...]

After the Tories accusing Labour of sleaze in the past few months, have the Conservatives not been watching their back yard enough? I don't know if Caroline Spelman is guilty of the accusations made over her methods of employment , or indeed whether Ray Lewis is guilty as charged over accusations made about him (although the fact that the Church of England fell out with him says a lot). What it does...

one of the benefits of the internet is that redaers from around the globe are able to contact us and help with their own private enquiries. Recently I have been helping from Australia to follow up on their family history searches. Having been in a similar position I can understand their desire to know more about their ancestors.

When we are asked the question about the relative popularity of right wing blogs compared to their left wing equivalents I think the point is well made that it is easier to blog in opposition. Although there are some splendid left bloggers such as Skipper , Hopi Sen, Paul Linford , Political Futures and Sadie's Tavern to name but a few, it is obviously more difficult to be both constructive and critical...

I just wanted to wish Boris congratulations on his victory for Mayor of London. I hope he can turn his energy and excitement into something really positive as far as London is concerned. After years of near hatred, I have to say that I was also a little sad to see Ken Livingstone go (but not a lot). He actually seemed to take it quite well. I had visions of him attacking Gordon Brown, the labour party...

When I was young and on a visit to the US, I was taken to a rodeo. I watched the cowboys mount angry bulls which were then released together into the arena. A violent dance then began with the bull trying to buck the cowboy from his back and the cowboy holding on for dear life or at least for dear prize money or bravado. If the bull was successful and the cowboy came crashing to the ground, the bull...

Political assassination is always an interesting thing to watch. I remembered seeing it happen to Thatcher and its effects made long lasting and deep, near fatal wounds on the conservative party. They never recovered even after Major won a general election after Thatcher's departure and it is only now, 18 years after her departure that they are beginning to look like a united party again. The...
