Now you would expect that those that rule over the UK , sorry, I mean those who do the UK citizens bidding , well them in parliament (!!) would be well educated, even very well educated, even attending the best universities...but what do they all do? The older generation of politicians all seem to be solicitors or barristers...lawyers. Not any more: the new crop of modern, "trendy", "professional"...

In a desperate attempt to secure its electoral base, the government is shamefully wooing religious extremists As every middlebrow with a newspaper column or Radio 4 slot to fill agrees, a vulgar "new atheism" is sweeping Britain. The readers of Richard Dawkins, Philip Pullman and Christopher Hitchens are, they tell us, crass because they do not appreciate the mystery of religion, the consolations...

The Respect annual conference took place in Birmingham on Saturday with 210 delegates attending. The event revolved around the three key themes of our general election campaign: anti-racism and defense of multiculturalism, opposition to the cuts agenda of the mainstream parties, and international solidarity. The opening session was introduced by Respect party leader Salma Yaqoob. Salma laid into New...

Labour candidate Julie Hilling is obviously working very very hard for the people of Bolton West. She has an entire section of the website devoted to her hard work : Oh dear at this rate she would be as useless as the current incumbent Ruth Kelly.

Nadine Dorries last week on ConservativeHome . Sometimes I feel sorry for some of the Labour women who were selected via all-women shortlists. Everyone knows who they are. Now here's Nadine Dorries today on twitter : How many women are their in Gordon Browns cabinet who were selected via an all woman shortlist? And, who are they? Anyone know? Yes - everyone does, Nadine. Everyone. Especially since...

There is quite a lot of nonsense written about all women shortlists. Nadine Dorries is chuffed to be much praised by a research-free rant in today's Daily Mail from Amanda Platell . Yesterday, I blogged questioning the "two classes of MP" talking point: After all, 35 of Labour's new women MPs in 1997 were selected on all women shortlists and 30 were not. (You can find the list in the appendix...

So.. here begins a no doubt futile attempt to explain to people who don’t instantly ‘get it’ why Ian Hislop’s attack on Yvette Cooper on Question Time last night was just so wrong – and yes, sexist. Ian challenged her: would you be in the Cabinet if your husband wasn’t a Cabinet minister? His implication being that no, she wouldn’t. First of all, the facts....

Very Interesting Article in the Times. Confirming that Derby North will be pivotal in the Conservatives forming the next Government at the general Election. Landslide win for Conservatives may bury Labour’s big names Some of Labour’s best-known MPs, including Margaret Beckett and Jacqui Smith as well as ten ministers, are predicted to lose their seats in the event of a landslide election...

Can you remember the world, pre-expenses, of 12 months ago? Think back to last year's party conferences... The bizarre ' announcement ' in the early of hours of the morning by one Damian McBride in a luxurious Manchester hotel that Ruth Kelly was to step down from the Cabinet to spend more time with her family. It was a big story then but seems small beer compared to the week in June this year when...

I haven't read any Dan Brown, I know next to nothing about him, and I've never felt I'm missing out on very much. (Having survived The Ruth Kelly Years, I've had enough of Opus Dei to last me a while, thank you kindly.) Having stumbled upon this article, however, I may have to hunt around a [...]

The penalty for leaving Islam is death in Iran. Islamic states are similar to the old Communists ones where - you couldn't physically leave the country - without a minder for close monitoring and so on - most people never left. Whereas in an Islamic state - although you are permitted to leave the country - you can't leave the religion. Both are very similar in other ways - you have state controlled...

No wonder many women find politics a turn-off and the idea of a career in Parliament less than appealing. Just look at the amount of vindictive press Harriet Harman attracted over the past seven days. If a mouthy, intelligent female – who, won an open election for her job, unlike her male superior – gets described as "thick" and "an idiot" by that repulsive shagger...
