Business Minister Pat McFadden has introduced a cooling off period for Model Agencies charging up front fees to young models. These young models are often privy to the harsh reality of the fact that being attractive is not a guarantee of success in the modelling Industry. Many of these young girls grow up with plenty of adulation from boys, family, everyone they meet in some cases and when the path...

The government has launched a crackdown on rogue agencies which charge aspiring actors and models hundreds of pounds in upfront fees. Campaigners say thousands of would-be performers are persuaded to part with large sums of money to cover "registration fees" or the cost of a portfolio, only to find the lucrative showbusiness contracts that they had hoped for never materialise. Pat McFadden,...

From the BBC : Ed Miliband has said the UK cannot afford to "say no" to nuclear power as he prepares to announce plans to fast-track a new generation of reactors... I've lost count of the number of times they've flip-flopped between being pro- and anti-nuclear energy, but at least Ed will have a nice cushy job lined up if he loses his seat at the next General Election, a bit like his former...

Incredibly the man who wrote this was Defence Secretary for six months. Is this the nonsense they tell each other in the Ministry of Defence? It was published in today's Independent by this blog's favourite ex-minister John Hutton. It starts...

The purpose of the Nato mission in Afghanistan is clear. It is to ensure that Afghanistan does not become a safe haven for international terrorism that would endanger our national security and that of our friends and allies. Our long-term strategy is also clear; it is to give the emerging Afghan democracy the means to do this job for itself.

It’s a popular myth that renewables just cannot deliver that much power. London Mayor Boris Johnson has joked about "crucifying our landscape with wind farms which, even when they are in motion, would barely pull the skin off a rice pudding." When he was Energy Minister John Hutton told Labour Conference ...

By Alex Smith / @alexsmith1982 On Septmeber 2, 2006, 14 servicemen died in Afghanistan on an RAF Nimrod. The results of the inquiry into that tragedy, released yesterday, reveal that the MoD is largely culpable. The report describes a: "PowerPoint culture in government that glosses over hard questions and detailed evidence, and sacrifices safety to incompotence, sloppiness, complacency and cynism."...

Britain's Territorial Army may be flavour of the week after Gordon Brown was forced to trim a £20m budget haircut in the face of an orchestrated political storm, but the TA has never enjoyed powerful protection inside the Ministry of Defence's menacing Whitehall HQ. There the regular army is always happier to see the 34,000-strong TA take the cuts rather than take a financial hit itself. The...
