Sighting from Ray W at Strumble Head pinched from the Pembrokeshire Birds Blog - I had at least 7 and possibly up to 12 Risso's Dolphin; one pod about half-way out, the second on or just inside the tide race. There were no calves and the dolphins ranged in colour from dark to very pale gray. They were active and there were two spectacular breaches. And for Cliff, the Porpoise calf that was tail-slapping...

Celtic Quest were preparing to take part in a coastguard rescue training scanario yesterday with Preseli Venture. Barry (Pembs Coastguard) arrived onsite to inform us that they were just starting a search for two missing divers. A minimum of 48 Risso's (including females with calves) were recorded in a total ot 8 seperate encounters by Sea Trust volunteers; Adrian Rodger, Rich Crossen and myself. The highlight birds at Strumble in August have already been blogged but there were other aspects that also seem worthy of a mention. Such as the annual gathering of about 300 mixed Razorbills and Guillemots accompanied by unfledged young. An unprecedented displacement of WILSON'S STORM PETRELS (Oceanodroma oceanicus) took place over the past weekend, involving up to 64 individuals. With a deep Atlantic depression fast moving towards NW Europe on 30 July and with two birds off Bridges of Ross (County Clare) on 29 July (Owen Foley) and a single from a Scilly pelagic NW of St Martin's on 31 July, expectations were high for the weekend....
