Forth Road Bridge Scotland Originally uploaded by AndyRob I don’t have anything in particular I wanted to say about the Forth Road Bridge really, just to post this photograph I took from a vantage point on the south bank of the Forth, just outside the town of Queensferry. Perhaps it was the presence of Willie Bain, smiling wanly in the public gallery, but today's Labour/SNP exchanges at first minister's questions seemed notably antagonistic. Mr Bain, of course, is a living, grinning reminder that Labour thumped the SNP in the Glasgow North East by-election . Today, like an invited Banquo, he hovered over the pre-lunch feast of oratory that is the weekly question session....

Would Calvin have recognised or welcomed Calvinism? What are the elements of his teachings that are still alive? One legacy of Calvin's is "Calvinism". Whether or not he intended this is not clear. But in the later years of his life he became very self-aware about his influence, through his writings, readily translated into English and Dutch and other languages, and the presence of congregations...

Been looking through my collection of photos taken in 2009, and just wanted to post some. A while ago Walkers crisps company had a competition where 6 selected crisps flavours were up for the public to decide which one would be added permanently to the already extensive selection of flavours. Seriously, I only liked the taste of the onion-bhaji crisps. The squirrel-flavoured one tasted of wood -__-"...

When I was a girl, growing up in a small town in Lancashire, I was used to the sights and sounds of an industrial landscape. From my bedroom window, I could see a woollen-spinning mill complete with tall, mill chimney and the sound of churning machinery. On days when the industrial process began, the smell from the extraction of lanolin from the wool was appalling! This was just part of life... the...

After being thoroughly drubbed in the Glasgow NE by-election the SNP need to dust themselves down and jump into positive mode. All I will say about the by-election was I hope the SNP now realise a strong local candidate must be the choice in these constituencies. The English unionist approach of parachuting in 'favourites' doesn't go down well here in Scotland. Jeff is suggesting they now drop their...

My country's resistance to nuclear energy is easy to understand, but its alternative is baffling Readers of London newspapers are used to blank spaces north of the border. Maps illustrating variations in house prices, healthcare provision, obesity rates, knife crime, tourist numbers – they show white beyond the diagonal that links a point north of Berwick to another point north of Carlisle....

It's satisfying, commissioning opinion polls, especially on topics where the other side is rich and powerful but hasn't published any poll results. That always makes me suspect our position is popular as well as right. The one we released today (thanks to Friends of the Earth Scotland and the ForthRight Alliance for co-commissioning it) covered Ministers' plans for a new Forth Road Bridge. We found...

France, which is pressing for concrete measures to stop bankers' excessive bonuses at the ongoing G-20 finance ministers' meeting in Scotland, has issued a decree of regulation on the eve of the meeting, expecting other participants to follow suit. By Leroy Carter Edinburgh’s top chefs may be salivating over the return of oysters to the Firth of Forth, but local people hope there are bigger fish to fry. Local historian, George Hackland, says the real benefit will be in the re-generation of his town and the return of prosperity to Newhaven. Newhaven used to be Scotland’s oyster [...]

In Praise of The Chambers Dictionary From Shelf Awareness: On the occasion of the closing of publisher Chambers Harrap , Scotland native Robin Dunn , director of the St. John ' s College Bookstore, Annapolis, Md., wrote: In my more tender years, there must have been at least three dozen sizable publishers in Edinburgh (and more in Glasgow, not least the pre-Harper/Murdoch Collins). There was much wailing...
