Sunday August 5th Thurso to the Isle of SkyeThis was pretty much a driving day about 240 miles I believe. We stopped every hour or less and stretched our legs and took pictures. We stopped at Betty Hill and mom and I picked out the house we were going to buy it overlooked Torrisdale Bay. We also stopped and took pictures of Loch Eriboll. The scenery was beautiful so between that and th

Saturday August 4th ThursoI go down to breakfast a little later than mom and John and sit at a table with David and George. After about 15 minutes I give up on ever getting a waiter to take our order so I finish my cereal and take off for the room. Went to the Orkney Islands the most northern point in Scotland. We took a 40 minute ferry ride from John OrsquoGroats Dunnet Head to South

Ben Stein writes on “Four lessons from the recession” in (19 November) in Fortune HERE which includes this observation: “ And another little note ... my much-missed father used to tell me with great approval Adam Smith's famous quote regarding prophecies of doom for America, "there is a lot of ruin in a nation ." Comment Another example of a famous quotation from Adam Smith...

When I was a girl, growing up in a small town in Lancashire, I was used to the sights and sounds of an industrial landscape. From my bedroom window, I could see a woollen-spinning mill complete with tall, mill chimney and the sound of churning machinery. On days when the industrial process began, the smell from the extraction of lanolin from the wool was appalling! This was just part of life... the...

Eighty-eight years earlier, the professor was lying in her crib in Scotland when a housekeeper in the next room dropped a vase she had been polishing. The vase shattered and the housekeeper was fired. As she packed up her few belongings, she decided to look for work in the house next door. She went next door and knocked on it (the door). A housekeeper answered. "Yes?" said the housekeeper....

If the sun was the size of a man and located in the Glasgow Science Centre, Uranus would be in Thurso and would be roughly the size of a small coin. It's worthwhile pausing here and thinking - all that space! It just so happens that astronomy clubs throughout Scotland are roughly located where planets would be, so we have a Scottish Solar System . I went to a talk last night where I learnt this stuff....

When the election comes, we shall be voting for our local representative and not for the entire party. That, at least, is the theory, although the whipping system means that we cannot ignore the party as a whole. At the time of the election, I plan to publish a post giving my own views on the manifesto commitments of each party, but I thought it might be an idea to give a thumbs up or down for (some...

Michael MacDonald, Halkirk, was successful in the MacNab Challenge yesterday. Derived from a famous 1925 book by John Buchan entitled "John MacNab" the challenge is to bag a stag, brace of grouse and a salmon, all on the same day. Michael raised around £2,300 that will be split between two charities; Alzheimer's Scotland: The Couthie Corner, Thurso Palliative Care, Dunbar Hospital,...

Wick beat Rothes 7-1 in the Highland League today. The Rothes keeper was sent off after 21 mins for a last man foul on David Allan. New signing Sam MacKay (above) made his full debut, scored a hat-trick and was voted man of the match. The fee paid to Deveronvale for Golspie based Sam was undisclosed, but it looks like a shrewd buy. Subs Gary Weir, Alan Farquhar and Ross Allan tormented the Rothes defence...
