Interesting coverage on the BBC which shows Fort George managed to make the Top 10 of most visited properties owned by Historic Scotland, coming in at 7th place, with Urquhart Castle making 3rd. While Central Belt attractions, not least Edinburgh and Stirling Castle, make it top of the list, and Urquhart castle has its big association [...]
Fantasy Island - home of the SNP's new caring sharing defence policy No sooner does the Grumpy SD blog on the lack of detail in the SNP's future defence plans post independence, then up pops SNP defence spokesperson/Westminster leader, (except when its Alex) Angus Robertson to tell the world that: 'Free' Scotland would allow English military forces to be based north of the border. Another lovely stained glass window in the Regimental Chapel commemorates St Andrew, the Patron Saint of Scotland. Jesus calls us over the tumult Of our life’s wild, restless, sea; Day by day His sweet voice soundeth, Saying, “Christian, follow Me!” As of old Saint Andrew heard it By the Galilean lake, Turned from home and toil and kindred, Leaving all for Jesus’ sake. Jesus...
By the time Fort George was completed in 1769, the Highlands were peaceful. The fort continued in use, however, as a training base for regiments recruited in Scotland, especially in the Highlands.
Fort George is one of the most outstanding fortifications in Europe. It is located about 10 miles North East of Inverness. It was built in the wake of the 1745-6 Jacobite Rising (Battle of Culloden) as part of a concerted effort by George II's government to ensure that the Highland clans would never again rise in support of the exiled Stuart dynasty.

Our second full day in Scotland saw us at Fort George. It was a dreary, rainy morning, but we stuck it out and were rewarded with lovely afternoon weather. Fort George is still an active military base, so it is totally functioning. But very historical and a beautiful location. Supposedly there are often dolphin and seal sightings from the gun turrets, but we didn't see any during our visit. We spent...

The MOD has revealed that it is less than happy with the proposed development of Whiteness Head due to the possibility of the live firing range having to curtail activities at Fort George. The proposed development at Whiteness Head includes a marina that would see increased boating activity near or around the firing range. Highland Council have already given the go ahead for planning permission but...
Contrary to how things may appear, Terry Butcher has not yet sanctioned bare-knuckle combat as an acceptable part of training manoeuvres within the Highland club's Fort George barracks base.
