Plans for a vote on Scottish independence are laid out today. They could change UK politics radically and forever Among the great ritual festivities of the British Isles, St Andrew's Day is a mouse. Patron saint of Scotland he may be but the Scots go far wilder on Burns Night and Hogmanay: for the rest of Britain, 30 November is a date of the utmost insignificance. Yet this year, the day may matter...

David Wilson was sentenced to two years behind bars and banned from working with children after admitting possessing nearly 3,000 illegal images. I must admit, that when I was asked to go to Fife to do two 1-day courses, I didn't know exactly where it was. Only later did I realise it wasn't even a town/city but an ancient region of Scotland roughly between Edinburgh and Dundee. I did the 1-day running-around business simulation course which always goes down well. This was followed by a course in Control Objectives for Information and related...

I've been quiet all week, not able to keep an eye on t'internet. So I've only just checked on Tam Smith the SNP candidate for Linlithgow and East Falkirk's website. Since one of my last posts before the crash was looking at Tam's propensity to speak the talk of other SNP luminaries I'm pleased to see other's are now speaking on his blog. In the last week he appears to have learnt the lesson and is...

"There are lessons to be learned and we will learn them" The quote above, from SNP leader Alex Salmond comes, not in the aftermath of Thursday's poll disaster for the SNP at the hands of Scottish Labour in Glasgow North East - but a year ago - in the wake of the nationalists previous failure to win in Glenrothes from Labour. Twelve months ago the SNP's seemingly infallible leader accepted...

So, finally the Labour Government have gained a seat in a parliamentary by-election in this Parliamentary term. Labour have finally turned the corner in campaigning terms in Scotland in my opinion. Watching them in three consecutive by-elections in just over 12 months has been really interesting. In Glasgow East Labour ran not only the wrong campaign, they took so long getting their campaign into gear...

Party increases share of vote to 60%, pushing Scottish National party into distant second place Ministers today hailed Labour's win in the Glasgow North East byelection as evidence that the party could defy poor UK-wide poll ratings and pull off a fourth consecutive election victory. Labour increased its share of the vote to 60%, pushing a deeply demoralised Scottish National party into a distant...

The Glasgow North East vote came down to a simple bidding war on localness. There should be more to politics than this The SNP has had some sensational byelection victories over the years, but we shouldn't forget that these were exceptional – that's what made them sensations. The SNP victory over a year ago in Glasgow East suggested that the nationalists could win anywhere in Scotland, but Glenrothes...

I had for some time thought it was likely that Labour would win the Glasgow North East by-election. The biggest sign that they thought they were on to a dead cert was the fact that they were quite happy for Glasgow Labour MP, Tom Harris, to spend polling day evening tweeting from the Will Young concert at the SECC. I did cruelly joke that maybe they wanted him out of the way, but if you think the result...

In the Glasgow North East byelection, the SNP could be beaten using tribal politics. The wider lessons of the result are complex The Glasgow North East campaign never really got started in the way some byelections catch fire or one candidate creates a bandwagon. And yet, this result will send ripples through the political classes . It is revealing that Labour held on with relative ease in one of the...

An absolutely excellent result for Labour with an absolutely cracking majority of 8111, almost as Michael Martin got in 2005 with a lower turnout. Phenomenal. We actually increased our share of a vote and in a westminster by election in a recession at the end of a third term of a Labour Government there was a swing from the SNP to Labour! Needless to say after more than 12 hours of straight campaigning...

The dole queue has lengthened perceptibly once more. Unemployment across Scotland rose by 67,000 in the last quarter, compared with the previous year . And here's the thing. The Glasgow North East constituency area retains its unwanted distinction of having the highest unemployment percentage in Scotland. There's more. Glasgow NE has the second highest rate of incapacity benefit claims in the UK....
