Nick Griffin didn’t speak to many Scots when he visited Glasgow last week Two men in crisp suits are standing outside the stylish Corinthian bar, nodding in a string of men and women, chatting to some as old friends. The pair are not bouncers – not any more – but members of the British National Party. Those entering are not regulars of the bar, but activists who have come to hear...

It's that time of year again, when the most polluting companies and sites in Scotland are unveiled to astonished gasps - astonished in that a 5 year old could probably have guessed the top four! But what's this at number five in the list? A combined heat and power plant? While combining heat and power makes a plant more effective, it doesn't mean that the plant suddenly doesn't pollute. The good news...

It's Blog Action Day today, with more than 7,000 bloggers around the world all talking about the one subject: climate change. So just to be different, I'll talk about Ancient Peruvian Art... Well, okay, maybe not! But I have been wondering this week whether I'm still as "despairing" as I was when I set up this blog a couple of years ago. Since then, we've had climate change legislation from...

The SNP have looked like delusional morons again, this time regarding defence matters . The SNP are convinced that English troops will remain on Scottish soil post independence. You know, like when they used to do after Culloden, Methven, Berwick, Dunbar, Falkirk, Flodden et all. Only this time there will be no face paint, Anti-Semitic Australians in tartan hats or sharp objects involved. Angus Robertson...

It's Gallagher's contention that an independent Scotland under Salmond's SNP could end up as a self-contained version of the top-down exploitation the country suffered under empire. The lesson goes beyond Scotland. Too often an anti-imperialist position ignores the gulf of power within a country, which can be as wide as that between conqueror and conquered. It doesn't always recognise that anti-imperialism...

Michael MacDonald, Halkirk, was successful in the MacNab Challenge yesterday. Derived from a famous 1925 book by John Buchan entitled "John MacNab" the challenge is to bag a stag, brace of grouse and a salmon, all on the same day. Michael raised around £2,300 that will be split between two charities; Alzheimer's Scotland: The Couthie Corner, Thurso Palliative Care, Dunbar Hospital,...

By Max Dunbar. Transition , Iain Banks, Little, Brown 2009 There was always a clear delineation between Iain Banks’s mainstream and science fiction, but you still feel there’s a link somewhere. In his literary fiction, Banks constantly pushed at the borders of the real, exploiting the possibilities of geology, consciousness and human craftmanship to create considerable mortal marvels....
