As many of you know, one of the things I love to collect is postcards - both vintage postcards and also modern ones. I was therefore delighted to be asked to participate in the latest Festival of Postcards which is organised by the Canadian genealogists and postcard collector, Evelyn Yvonne Theriault . A Festival of Postcards is a Blog Carnival - a gathering together of blog posts on a common subject...

. Over the course of the weekend the PM Gordon Brown has indicated that he would now be prepared in principal to engage himself in the proposed debates to be held on Sky Television, who it has to be said - have been like a dog with a bone in their on going harassment of the PM to participate in a pre - election debate with the leaders of the Conservative and Liberal parties respectively. The decision...

I was speaking to Ian today about his cycle LEJOG attempt that unfortunately ended at Dumfries Medical Centre. Apparently one of Ian's knees had been giving him problems as he was cycling up Shap in the Lake District- he carried on trying to cycle 'through' the pain. He managed to get to the top (shrouded in clouds at the time) and from there on it was a downhill ride for most of the distance to the...

Today Peter and I took a bus to Coombe Bisset and walked back to the camp site from there. The day was cloudy but remained dry and warm. We passed through Throope Manor where we saw the very pretty church in the picture. When we got back to the campsite the clouds started to thin out and the evening felt quite cool. The latest news from Ian Heritage and his brother is that they have arrived at Gretna....

Passengers on domestic flights to Scotland face having to show their passports to police when they land under terrorism laws, The Daily Telegraph can disclose. Despite already proving their identity to airline operators before boarding, passengers on internal flights will still face routine checks by police when they disembark. The move emerged after five Tory front bench MPs, including Chris Grayling,...

Today's date - the ninth day of the ninth month in the ninth year of the century - has inspired and frightened various people in equal measures. In Chinese numerology the number 9 represents 'long life', so its triple appearance on the calendar has led a large amount of couples in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao and Singapore to get married on this lucky day. In Britain and the USA , where 999 is the...

Ladies and Gentlemen we are in Scotland - in Gretna Green. Day 8 of the ride was remarkably downhill, yes there were a few killer hills but the majority was fairly flat! The biggest thing I had to struggle with was the wind. There were some serious cross winds and head winds to battle against but even so I made good time and am happy there's only 80 miles of this adventure left. For the Scottish contingent...

Super-Audaxer Neil Fraser has highlighted a couple of local Audaxes which look like really great rides and might appeal to a lot of club members. First off - " Midnight Madness! " on Friday 4th September. This is a 200km ride that starts from Biggar at 9pm, goes over the Beeftub to Moffat then down the old A74 to Longtown. Then comes all the way back again. It's an easy 200 and the only event...

I was driving back from Manchester on Friday afternoon, having helped one of my daughters to move house from Manchester to York. The weather in England was fine, dry and sunny. However, when I arrived at the Scottish border at Gretna, it was as if someone had drawn a line along the border and said "OK, let's put all the rain on that side!" It was like driving into a monsoon. Having just seen...

The inspiration for my shawl comes from Gretna Green. Friends of mine had a wonderful ceremony at the very beautiful blacksmith house. A beautiful sculpture of a couple embracing stands outside. The scenery was so beautiful .I loved the place so much.In the evening the sunset was so spectacular a lovely bluey orange and reddish hue, green land and shrubbery.Quite possibly one of the most beautiful...

Presenting Mr & Mrs Mcguiness. Last weekend we attended our friends wedding held in Gretna Green . Gretna's famous runaway marriages began in 1753 when an Act of Parliament, Lord Hardwicke's Marriage Act, was passed in England, which stated that if both parties to a marriage were not at least 21 years old, then consent to the marriage had to be given by the parents. This Act did not apply in Scotland,,...

Looks like another of the newer names in Scottish football will soon cease to exist. Not that Livingston FC will be mourned by too many. Like Gretna, they were perceived as Johnny-Come-Latelys, upsetting the established order by living outwith their means. But what's more worthy of contempt? A Gretna or Livi who took risks and dared to aspire to success against the odds, or an Albion Rovers or East...

...I managed to drag myself off the golf course and kick-off season 2009/10. A bit of a bland list of pre-season friendlies so far and I finally made the decision to get out and see how Queen of the South's numerous new signings were shaping up. It was good to see the First Division club looking after their local neighbours Gretna 2008 and today's crowd of 683 was the largest in the clubs year long...
