When you’ve been called mad by Iain Banks, you know you’re in for an interesting holiday. And after a week of – well, weather – on the Isle of Mull, I’m beginning to think Banksy had the right of it. Mull is beautiful – glacier-carved rocky severity shrugging its way out of blankets of rich autumnal colour. Cloud lifts in wisps from the mountaintops – they...

I was looking through my photographs and came across some ones I took whilst visiting Scotland earlier this year and late last year. They were mainly taken on the Isle of Mull and Isle of Skye. How I miss living in Scotland. Enjoy the Scottish Mosaic.
Tobermory Distillery late 1800s Alfred Barnard made an epic journey with some friends in the late 1800s and visited working whisky distilleries in Scotland, Ireland and England. About his journey and distillery visits he wrote a book called ’The Whisky Distilleries of the United Kingdom’, describing in great detail and wonderful style the distilleries of that era. It’s a fascinating...
It's odd that Jonathan Meades' Off-Kilter series, three one-hour films about Scotland currently playing on BBC4 in the UK, doesn't make mention of Samuel Johnson's Journey to the Western Islands of Scotland , his 1775 account of a 1773 exploration of Scotland in the company of James Boswell. Or maybe it does mention it, and I just missed the reference? Anyway, this week the parallel became even more...
On Wednesday last week, we set off for the west coast of Scotland to have a look at Oban. The Gaelic name An t'Oban means The Little Bay and it's easy to see why. The bay is protected from the worst of the weather by the island of Kerrera and the much larger Isle of Mull as can be seen in the above picture. Looking inland and, high above the town is the impressive edifice of McCaig's Tower perched...
Never mind the play – the view from some venues, such as the Minack in Cornwall, is worth a standing ovation After 10 years in business, Keswick's Theatre by the Lake finally had its big moment last week, when the Guardian's Comment pages declared that "no other theatre in Britain sits in such a splendid spot" . Regrettably, I have yet to go there – although I did write an article...
Our summer holiday this year was much anticipated and we headed off for a couple of weeks on the west coast of one of THE most beautiful countries in the world, Scotland! Our main location for the first week being Tobermory on the enchanting Isle of Mull. There's something very exciting and very calming about driving North. All too often I have to turn right when I reach the M6 motorway and drive down...
I mentioned a couple of days ago that on day 4, we had a dilemma, whether to go to the Isle of Mull or not. We decided not to and headed towards north instead. But we kept the option still open, and on our way back to south, we decided that now it’s a good [...]
In the morning of day 4 we had a dilemma – whether to go to the Isle of Mull, or not. The thing with this island is that it takes hours to drive to the port where a ferry goes from, because the port is on a peninsula and in order to reach there, one [...]
Fox Terrier looking towards Ben More, Isle of Mull. After a hard climb, Mouser enjoys a rest at the summit of Creach Bheinn on the Isle of Mull. Although only a humble graham, it is a steep ascent from Loch Spelve. She is seen here, looking towards Ben More, the highest mountain on Mull, for her next expedition! Oldest golden eagle dies The oldest wild golden eagle in Britain has died on the Isle of Jura off the coast of Scotland. The bird, which was tagged on the Isle of Mull in 1987 as still a chick, was 22 years old. The previous oldest known wild eagle was 16.
