Catholic World News November 20, 2009 During a visit to Argentina, Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz, the longtime personal secretary to Pope John Paul II, said that the next step toward beatification of the late Pontiff was up to Pope Benedict XVI. "We do not want the Pope to rush, he should analyze it properly," the Polish cardinal said. His words seemed to provide indirect confirmation of recent...
The Pope John Paul II Hall in Croatia, designed by Randić & Turato is quite amazing. The skin dematerializes to allow light in and out of the seemingly heavy, solid mass. From within, the sense of the space is very light and open. I also really like the siting and how the portico integrates into the plaza, and how the zone is re-used for confessions. The entire project is really well done....
Vatican City, Nov 21, 2009 / 02:59 pm ( CNA ).- Today Pope Benedict XVI extended a warm personal welcome to artists from all over the world who met with him in a private audience hosted at the Sistine Chapel. In a moving address he challenged the artists, as "custodians of beauty," to be "heralds and witnesses of hope for humanity." Artists from many countries, who represented the...
In 1998, Pope John Paul II formally apologized for the failure of Catholics to help Jews during the Holocaust, but considering that the Vatican continues to claim the moral highground, we should remember what exactly it did—or rather failed...

The Holy Father delivered the following discourse. Dear Cardinals, Brother...

Damian Thompson wonders what's so hard about understanding that the Catholic Church will never ever ever ordain women: Thanks to technical problems, I wasn’t able to comment on Rowan Williams (”Archbishop of Canterbury” in the Henrician usurpation tradition, as Gerald Warner calls him) lecturing the Vatican on the virtues of women priests. I’m glad he did, because it is high...
Vatican City, Nov 19, 2009 / 12:06 pm ( CNA ).- This afternoon Pope Benedict XVI met with professors and students of Roman Pontifical Universities and discussed the “urgent need, which still persists today, to overcome the separation between faith and culture.” Speaking as well to participants in the International Federation of Catholic Universities (FIUC), the Holy Father drew from John...
...Obama evidently expected that his election would change not only America's image in the world but the policies of nations both friendly and unfriendly. In saluting the fall of the Berlin Wall, on videotape, he made no mention of Ronald Reagan or Margaret Thatcher, Lech Walesa or John Paul II, Mikhail Gorbachev or Vaclav Havel, but cited as a world-changing event his own election in the United States...

The above performcae, though unrelated, seems doubly à propos with this story — Argentinians remember life of Pope John Paul II . Not mentioned in the article is the Papal mediation in the Beagle conflict , by which war with Chile was averted. Subscribe in a reader
Fr. Barron has a thoughtful piece on 2012 --although he completely disagrees with my absolution of the charge "anti-Catholic." He notes that anyone who prays gets wiped out; that certain instances of symbolism seem to suggest that prayer gets you nowhere (notably the dome of St. Peter's falling and crushing all the people praying there --a scene he says will go down in the annals as one of...
Of all the absurd things done by President Obama -- I confess to still chuckling every time those two words are strung together -- the most emblematic must be his remarks (delivered remotely) to commemorate the fall of the Berlin Wall. From Michael Barone's latest column for the Washington Examiner : As for the planet beginning to heal, well, that's not clear. Obama evidently expected that his election...
