Since 26th October I have been posting a selection of photographs taken on a tour undertaken in mid October through East Anglia and ending in Warwickshire. The first stop on the journey was at the exquisite Rushton Triangular Lodge and the last was Baddesley Clinton, both sites having powerful recusant associations. As Father Southwell started to say Mass, a group of "ruffians" with swords turned up at the front door. They started shouting and swearing at the servant, who was refusing them entry. The four men were priest-catchers. They were battering the door down to force entry. Fr Southwell thought quickly on his feet. Today we went to Baddesley Clinton, a picturesque medieval moated manor house and garden in Warwickshire. The thing that I enjoyed the most was learning about how cheeky Catholics hid down the toilet when they were being persecuted in the 1590's.
