Birmingham's Spaghetti Junction 'Britain's most intimidating road'

The second most hair-raising intersection area, according to the survey of 3,225 drivers, was the M8 and its junctions through central Glasgow while Marble Arch in central London was third. Almost one in 10 drivers say they avoid ''scary'' junctions altogether and as a result drive an average of 238 miles extra a year on detours. Road systems in London, Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow and Leeds were...

Kites and outdoor swimming banned at park

Flying kites and using an outdoor swimming pool has been banned at a village play park for health and safety reasons. The harmless activity of kite flying has been grounded in case the objects get caught on an a overhead telephone cable and children climb the telegraph pole to free them. The ban comes after the popular swimming pool on the same site was put out of use as villagers could no longer...

British Fly Fair 2009

The Fly Fair last weekend at Trentham Gardens was a fantastic event as usual. The weekend was a great opportunity to watch and learn from some of the great tyers from around the world. I took the opportunity to catch up with some of my favourite tyers including Chris Watson, Phil Holding, Roy Christie and Dave Wiltshire, these guys tie flies that catch fish, not the angler. Each time I watch them I...

A question of scrap...

I have another question. Part of my quest to be known as the nosiest blogger on the whole wide interweb I guess, but this morning as I was tidying - well, 'putting away' would be a better description, I realised that my 'scrap' box is taking over my life again. It's about 7 inches deep and about 10 long, and sits on my desk, supposedly to hold anything that is not a whole sheet. Its presence encourages...

Round Britain Rallied

The closing date for the Round Britain Rally , in which participants are challenged to find and photograph one or more landmarks for every county in England, Wales and Scotland, has passed and I have dispatched a CD of photos to the committee. This means that I can actually reveal the places I visited! At last! Google Map here . Green bikes are ones I've ticked off, red blobs I didn't manage. There's...

Bright Idea: Reddish House

Reddish House, the country residence of Cecil Beaton from 1948 until 1980. Image by Paul Billington. In a pile of DVDs given me by a British friend is "Bailey by Beaton" (1971), a loopy salute to and profile of old-guard photographer Cecil Beaton by groovy young photographer David Bailey. The documentary, a classic of the genre, is the kind of film only the British can get away with: meandering,...

Medieval Treasure

As I perused this BBC website this morning I saw a headline "Cash-strapped church's £1.8m cup". Well that's my sort of story so I clicked on the link. A church, which has just spent £250,000 repairing its roof and as a further £350,000 general upkeep bill, has discovered it has a unique silver chalice worth £1.8m. The treasure is being described as one of the best...

Oxtail

I've admired a particular recipe in the second Moro cookbook, 'Casa Moro' for some time. I've studied the accompanying photograph of the finished dish more times than is probably healthy, and often wondered what it tastes like. But, I've just never got around to cooking it. The dish is 'Rabo De Toro con Rioja' or for those who donta speaka Español (Who me?) it's 'Oxtail with Rioja and Chorizo'....

Friday 14 August 2009

Sorry my blog is a little late this morning. No excuse really, just a succession of interruptions. This week the Local Government Chronicle is featuring an article by me about our experience in Wiltshire, and linking that to the themes which were discussed at the Chief Executives’ seminar which I chaired earlier this year. I hope you agree that it’s great for Wiltshire to be featured in...

Cath Kidston bucks the recession

First it was just the tea towel and cute polka-dot plates, then the sewing box and tent. Now the unchecked growth of floral print is taking over the high street, according to new figures. Sales and profits have jumped more than 60% at Cath Kidston, the purveyor of "kitchenalgia" that has become as much a part of the (chintzy) fabric of British life as the late Laura Ashley. Accounts filed...
