Neolithic Wiltshire

Wiltshire is a fascinating place to live. Stonehenge and Avebury are not far away and we have a number of white horses in the area. In addition to this there are many other interesting but not so well known Neolithic monuments. Silbury Hill is a man-made mound. The exact reson for its creation is still [...]

Stonehenge, Bluehenge and a heritage cover-up?

Though slightly outside the remit of Avebury Matters , the recent announcement in the press of a 'Bluehenge' close to Stonehenge is exciting news indeed. One wonders, however, why knowledge of this discovery was not made public before now. Not all remains hidden however. Mike Parker-Pearson (director of the Stonehenge Riverside Project ) is due to give a talk at the Wiltshire Heritage Museum on the...

Fyfield Down

I went to Fyfield Down again recently. Set up above Avebury, I used to walk there sometimes when we were living Marlborough. It is a much more wild and windswept feeling place than most of Wiltshire, and the Sarsen boulders lying along the hillsides really give it the feel of an upland moor in Wales or [...]

Uncle Eric

Yesterday Lindsay and I went down to Avebury, where we stayed at The Lodge - owned by my grandfather when he saved the stone circle from destruction - and attended the auction today at Great Bedwyn where the monument to Uncle Eric was sold (see earlier posting for a photograph). We have acquired it, and now have to make arrangements for it to be transported to The Beeche Centre at High Elms, its final...

What to do for the Autumn Equinox

The Autumn Equinox falls on 22 September. Also called Mabon or the late harvest festival, it is celebrated when day and night are of equal length. It is a time of balance before the descent into the darkness of winter and a time to stake stock of the fruits of the harvest - whether they are real fruit and vegetables you have grown yourself, or things you have achieved in your life since the start of...

Back From Avebury, Now For Beer

So Sunday morning and afternoon were spent out in the wilds of Wiltshire, and a fine time was had by all. Today's destination: Avebury and its stone circle. Ben's on time for once. Avebury was OK. Stones all over the place, and you can actually get up to the things. In many ways a more interesting place to visit than Stonehenge, I'd have said. And at least there's a pub, which Stonehenge lacks. Mind...

P-P-P Pick up a pantheism.

It turns out it only takes twenty minutes back in the depths of the countryside before I revert back to being a pantheist. But I've got to be actually in the countryside, not just driving through it. Where should I visit next? I just don't think Battersea Park is going to cut it. Avebury ? Maybe I'll book a youth hostel overnight in Wiltshire and go exploring. Yes. But this time I'd better get some...
