Holiday Postcard No 3 : Coal and Kinship

As the rain pours and the wind buffets outside and there is no hope of a car boot sale today, it seems right to post another virtual postcard (or two) of our "Holiday at Home". So snuggle up to your favourite squashy cushion with a cup of something warming and let's begin... A model of the area around the current museum building. There was a passenger line, a coalfield line and a coal canal....

Mining and Countermining in the Crimean War

Been trying without much luck to find out about this activity during the siege of Sevastopol. This plan on ebay looks worth getting - shame I am so poor. I thought our local Radstock museum published an article or booklet on the subject but although they were helpful they didn't know of anything. I must have dreamt it. Maybe I'm wrong but I have a feeling that similar to the Great War many men of the...

Crimean War photographs

Actually those Crimean War reenactment photos have inspired me. I'm going to the Radstock Museum later as they publish a booklet on men from the Somerset coalfield in that conflict - presumably the miners were employed by the engineers in the prolonged siege operations there. Anyway you don't really have to speculate on what people looked like in the Crimean war as its well documented with photos mostly...

... Kilver Court A couple of weekends ago, my SUP friend S and I visited Kilver Court : this was in the same trip as last week's ABC Wednesday Jaunt which led us past the lovely prairie-style planting in Radstock. This garden's been on my must-see list for a couple of reasons: it was opened to the public last year after an extensive restoration and also because it features a rather prominent viaduct...

Radstock railway viaduct

First of several instalments of photos from the Christmas and New Year period. This is a disused railway viaduct in Radstock, Somerset - which I think is on the old Somerset and Dorset line. It's actually close to a junction with the old GWR line as well, and I'm not sure which is which, but as this line was pointing towards Midsomer Norton, I'll assume it was the S&D. Like many other parts of...

Canadian Liberals and YouTube

Its good to see a bit of fun in politics check out these YOUTUBES from the Canadian Young Liberals. On a serious note on Monday we held our celebration day for our Learning Difficulty Networks in Bath and NE Somerset. We have three newtorks based in Bath, Radstock and Keynsham and they are working hard to raise their concerns and issues and get their voice heard. As Chair of the...
