Far below the Earth’s surface , where the sun rarely penetrates, is a world of twinkling glow worms, precious gems and limestone caves and mountains, a land inhabited by nature alone. Within this world are visions to rival many landscapes decorating our horizon; lakes lie still and calm, great networks of caves know no borders and rivers and rivulets carve an ever-evolving terrain. 1. Cheddar...

Good W.I meeting last night. A man who makes crisps using only local products from around the country. He refuses to allow any supermarkets to sell his crisps and so depends on word of mouth. He sells to local deli's, schools, universities, football clubs etc . He was a very funny speaker and then he gave (25 of us) 500 bags of crisps. I haven't had a crisp for about 5 months so I had to try one. I...

It was a beautiful day as we set off for an hour and a half's drive to meet up with our friends at Priddy , near the Cheddar Gorge. It's a kind of half way point where we meet up for a walk in the spectacular limestone landscape around the gorge. As you approach Cheddar the spine of the Mendip hills breaks out from the flat rather nondescript Somerset landscape. The underlying limestone has created...

Decided to get out of the smoke for a few days this week by telling Mrs W that we were going to spend a few days in the Peak District. Little did she know that my cunning plan included spending Monday at a seminar on Barley Wine organised by the Guild of Beer Writers and hosted by Thornbridge Brewery - a match made in heaven. My notes are copious so I must have learned something but it was followed...

We've just got back from a fabulous weekend away in Somerset, staying with our friends Sarah and Alex and their two children Jason and Katie. The highlight was the Party for life Ball arranged by the inspirational Sarah and committee from the village of Timsbury . It was a very enjoyable evening at the atmosphere in the village as groups made their way to the hall, all done up in their evening dresses...

Vodka and cheese… possibly not a combination you’d immediately think of putting together, but don’t knock it until you’ve tried it! We recently got sent some Godminster Vintage Oak Smoked Cheddar and Organic Godminster Vintage vodka. Now vodka and cheese are two of my favourite things, so I wasn’t going to pass this opportunity up! The cheese was oak smoked and made from...

No not a new kind of sandwich, places in Somerset not too far from Bristol. I had been stopping at a campsite called Splott Farm, not far from Cheddar. I needed to get away for a few days and it filled my need perfectly. A small site with great facilities and all for ten pounds a night with electric hook up. A check on Birdguides prior to my departure on Weds 12 revealed a Great White Egret at Meare...

A Legion member living in Belgium believes he may have one of the final letters written by WWI veteran Harry Patch, who died last month aged 111. Chris Lock, who is the Vice Chairman of the Royal British Legion in Ypres, had asked Mr Patch to be guest of honour at a memorial inauguration ceremony, due to be held in October. But due to ill health Mr Patch could not make it, and sent the branch a letter,...

I've been back from Devon since Wednesday and I kept putting off updating my blog until I had my pictures to show you. I still haven't had time to edit any, or even upload some to the PC so that part will have to wait. I though I really should post something. Our holiday in Devon and Somerset was....well....in a word...WET! lol It was wet when we got there and it just kept raining. The campsite was...

BIG GREEN GATHERING Road Closure Order dated 20th July When is a road closure not a road closure? The injunction to stop the Big Green Gathering cited the fact that the Big Green Gathering could not gain a Road Closure order in time for the event, despite the fact that the Highways Department had told the Big Green Gathering Chair, Brig Oubridge that it would be done. On Tuesday, 28th July, after the...
