St. Aidan to Abbey Manor (Free subscription) | yesterday
Couple of great pioneer* stories from earlier this week: 1. The Guardian reports on a Christian family who've been inspired to set up a woodland commune in Somerset. Lots of really challenging stuff in Tobias Jones' account, for example: it feels to me as if old-fashioned charity is at the far periphery of our life. We have a few standing orders to worthy causes and put a small cheque in the post,...

Because the stratigraphy in many of the key sites in Somerset and Avon is difficult to interpret (and difficult to date, in spite of a plethora of modern techniques) the date of the glacial and fluvio-glacial deposits is a matter for conjecture. The latest thinking seems to be that the GBG (Greatest British Glacation) occurred in Oxygen Isotope stage 16 -- ie about 650,000 years ago. That places it...

There are so many exquisite gardens beginning with "H" that I can't fit them into one entry, so I'm concentrating on members of the Historic Houses Association today, because you won't get finer architecture than this and the gardens are spectacular too! If, like me, you are interested in visiting gardens, this is a wonderful organisation to join - you pay an annual fee and you can visit...

Not sure if I've mentioned it on this blog, but I once had a go at being an art historian. It was a time long, long ago, when I had been made redundant from a job in IT support (which seems to be a bit of a recurring theme in my life). Being a level headed sensible computer techie, I thought to myself 'with this redundancy cheque what I really need to get on in life is to learn about paintings'. So,...

I found Wansdyke on the map and went to have a look, but never imagined the richness of pre-historic monuments to be found on a 3 mile walk on the Pewsey Downs. I started at the bottom of Knap Hill (above and below) a hilltop causewayed enclosure from about 5700 years ago (BP), where Stone Age folk would meet periodically to celebrate and renew tribal loyalties or deal with their dead. Then comes Adam's...

So today is dark and dismal and to be honest incredibly cold here in Somerset. No-one in our house wants to go out so we, me and the 2 moggies, are snuggled inside watching some rubbish TV and checking out blogs on the blog train. So far so good. However it's not actually achieving anythinbg on my list of things to do. For starters there is the shopping which came via Asda van this am which needs a...

In the second of three posts, we focus on individual exhibits from the weird and wonderful collection of our Museum of the Month - the Grant Museum. This week's featured exhibit is the disarticulated skeleton of a northern bottle-nosed whale, Hyperoodon ampullatus - the same type which swam into London in January 2006. Due to the restricted space in the Museum's current location, only the skull and...

This is Northleaze primary school, long ashton. There is a road between this school use only car park and the school, but there is a zebra crossing. This gives the kids the walking to school experience without the parents schedule being too badly disrupted by having to walk the kids to school and then run home to drive to work. Why doesn't anywhere in Bristol have decent parent parking like this?
