Sunday morning is a half day tour round Teignmouth and Dawlish, two sea side towns a few miles up the coast from Torquay. What this entails is a drive out through Welswood and Babbacombe with a running commentary on the way. Usually I mention the human arm bone found in Welswood, with human teeth marks in it which some learned professor from Cambridge University had the nerve to suggest that some people...

Wild Devon , the magazine of the Devon Wildlife Trust , has an interesting article in its Winter 2009 issue: "Mapping the past", in which David Chamberlain of Devon County Council's Land Changes Department writes about the rapid changes in Devon landscape over the past century. He mentions, for instance, the shrinking heathland of the Bovey Heathfield , and the establishment of new ponds...

On my way home this evening, walking because I can't use my bus pass after 11pm, and it was only just after 11, I heard the not too gentle sound of a helicopter flying towards the centre of Torquay. Now 45 minutes later it is still there, still making lots of noise while most of Torquayions (those who live in Torquay) are tucked up in bed trying to sleep. Hovering helicopters do make a lot of noise...

Not my photographs, just plucked off the web, but there is something peculiarly truthful about the bottom one. Torquay was early British Seaside to my family, the learning of the seaside code of fun. We started in Kent and, over the years, worked our way across the south coast, venturing at last into Devon and Cornwall. This time it was the invitation to do the pre-dinner reading on Saturday night...

Today is Samuel Taylor Coleridge's birthday (and mine as well. ) To honor one of my favorite poets and shared birthday mates I'd like to explore Devonshire cooking. Devon was th e shire where Coleridge was born on this date in 1772. Devon is a wonderful place with the English Channel to the south and the Irish Sea to the North. One of its other towns is Torquay , the town wheret he TV show " Fawlty...

How cute is this house? And if you look closely you can see the sea! It's in one of my favourite parts of the UK, down in Devon. I like Cornwall and Kent is beautiful but Devon has this irristable charm. My Great Uncle used to have the best little place in the middle of Torquay, I can still remember the bedroom I used to get when I stayed. My brother was way too small to get more than a cot, but my...
