Having foolishly signed up for the Endurancelife South Devon Coastal Half-Marathon I ventured out for my first run on the course on Saturday. First of all I'll get my excuses in - didn't go to bed until 2am the previous morning and I've got a cold. Also it's been tipping it down for weeks now and most of the course is pretty muddy! However, despite my lungs only working at 75% it didn't go too badly....

An umpire at Wimbledon in the 1970s who claimed to have rebuked John McEnroe Bill Collings, who has died aged 100, retained a zest for life and an interest in other people right until the end. For many years he lived in a modern flat with a spectacular view of Fistral beach, the main surfing beach at Newquay in Cornwall. Bill, with his wife Rita, would go surfing after finishing work as the manager...

From the Tony Kempster ground-hopping forum The poster is from Hemel Hempstead--- and is a serial ground hopper - but when anyone asks why me and Kev stay local, this may give you some idea TRURO Five intrepid travelling Tudors: 6.00am start from Hemel station - train delayed at Paddington for 20 mins, then "extra" stops added when we reach the West Country. The last child artist as good as seven-year-old Keiron Williamson was Picasso, says Norfolk gallery owner Last year he was colouring in dinosaurs with crayons, but this weekend a seven-year-old boy from Norfolk has sold a batch of 16 watercolours, oil and pastel landscapes for £17,000. 1. Who Has The Key To Devon’s Loch? Like the aforementioned steed, in recent outings we have been comfortably ahead, a decent buffer between ourselves and our rivals, only to flounder of our own accord, our limbs splayed to each point of the compass like an all too willing harlot. Last week’s draw against Hull marked the fifth time this season that we have taken the lead in a game only...

I feel like going to the beach and I don't mean some dirty beach with murky water and dirty sand! I want to go to a beautiful beach resort with beautiful seaside Holiday Cottages just minutes away from the clear blue sea and glimmering white sand! Owners Direct for instance would be a great site to visit when it comes to finding awesome beach holidays. Offering all holiday goers a huge selection of...

Jon here....love and best wishes to Ri who isn't well at the moment. After an infection earlier in the week and medication, Gail is now getting stronger by the day and walking really well. Teazel in particular doesn't leave Gail's side for long and appears to know there's something not quite right. I bonded well with her while Gail was in hospital and she could well be the best puppy we have ever had....

Prawle Point is a headland in the South Hams, midway between Salcombe and Start Point. It is the most southerly point in Devon and well known for the good birdwatching for migrant birds in spring and autumn. Prawle also is a good sea-watching viewpoint, whether for birds, marine life or ships. The area is famous in geology for its Pleistocene cliff-line, fringed by periglacial head deposits spread...

Combe House Hotel is one of those beautiful country retreats that you have to get to stay in at least once in your lifetime. The minute you step inside the heavy oak door into grand Elizabethan entrance hall and welcomed by the real log fire you know its time to revel in luxury and start living like a Lady of the Manor, or Lord for that matter. Nestled amongst the rolling hills of the Otter Valley...

Sunday 25th November saw the Westgates down in the scenic Devon countryside for the Drogo 10. For a demanding off-road 10 miler this must be one of the best. Late on Saturday we realised our names weren’t on the website entrants list and a conversation with the organisers confirmed they had not received our entry. The postal service just isn’t what it used to be with belligerent post-persons...

Just look at the picture above. A fair-sized lake just set back from a shingle beach, cut off from the sea by scrubby grassland. It is positioned in a small valley between cliffs. Placed just northwards of Prawle Point and Start Point on the south Devon coast. I stumbled upon this vision of patch perfection when botanising in the area back in June. I stare at this photo often, dreaming of Whiskered...
