Was talking to a chap at Devon Earth brewery the other day, a newish small operation based in Paignton, and was rather tickled to hear that he brews beer for monks (not punks). Neither does he brew like a monk, sadly. Instead a barrel of his Devon Earth bitter gets sent to the Benedictine brothers at Buckfastleigh Abbey, which can be found on the southern edge of Dartmoor (I sometimes drop in when...

London may have got its first X-crossing this week ( In praise of… , 3 November), but Britain certainly didn't. Aberdeen has had several for at least 25 years, perhaps longer, and as far as I am aware no one went to Japan for the idea. In fact it is wholly possible that some observant Japanese visitor took it home with him. Geoff McQuillan Aberdeen • There has been one in Balham for several...

My grandfather died last week. We all knew his funeral was going to be a bit out of the ordinary but weren't quite expecting this. This is what the local paper had to say about it. There was also a photographer at the funeral taking pictures but I'm not sure which paper he was from. Looking back, I note we had holidays in Woolacombe in April, Italy in May, Pittenweem (Fife, Scotland) in August, Alicante (Spain) in September, we are off to Cornwall soon for 5 days....

The notion that Fleet St should be free of buses has been around ever since Fleet St was pedestrianised which was over 20 years ago. There is an other way round other than using Fleet St; two in fact. The first is that the buses that come down Union St and Pimlico continue round the Post Office Roundabout and up Abbey Road and turn left into Torr Church Road onto Lucius St and left down Belgrave Rd...

I was out and about the other day in Somerset and on my way back to Gloucestershire I passed through Wiltshire. This got me to thinking, how many of the 86 counties in Great Britain have I actually visited (as in actually stopped there)? I thought it would be almost all of them... It's not. See the end of the post for my total - advise me oh worthy masses which unvisited counties should I go to...?...
