Sunday 25th November saw the Westgates down in the scenic Devon countryside for the Drogo 10. For a demanding off-road 10 miler this must be one of the best. Late on Saturday we realised our names weren’t on the website entrants list and a conversation with the organisers confirmed they had not received our entry. The postal service just isn’t what it used to be with belligerent post-persons...

The Train Kept A Rolling: The trip to see Motorhead in Plymouth last Wednesday was a delight. Bearing in mind the new advert on TV asking us to drive 5 miles a week less to cut down on the CO2 emissions, we met them half way with Mrs. B dropping me off 2.5 miles closer to home at our doorstep station of Hamworthy Junction for the 12.42, rather than from the main station in Poole. At Dorchester South...

A glorious mixture of castles and spectacular camellia collections make up my choices for "C" gardens today, starting with Caerhays in Cornwall, which has some of the best camellias and magnolias I've ever seen, together with colour displays that will leave you speechless if you visit in the spring! Hidden away on a peninsular overlooking the sea, Caerhays Castle (below) is only open early...

Photos to follow Sunday 16th August It was the last day of the Temporary Holiday Site so after going to the DA coffee morning we hitched up and set off. We decided not to go to Cornwall as it would be too long a drive along busy, narrow roads but headed instead to Powderham castle, near Exeter. The journey was very good until the end when I missed the turning. We ended up driving to Dawlish before...

I cannot believe we are almost halfway though October, it seems no time at all since this year started. But then again, we have had another busy year. A quick check with Glyn confirms we have commitments all this week. Looking back, I note we had holidays in Woolacombe in April, Italy in May, Pittenweem (Fife, Scotland) in August, Alicante (Spain) in September, we are off to Cornwall soon for 5 days....

You can accumulate a lot of clutter when you’ve lived in the same place for a long time — so imagine what it’s like for the Earl of Devon, whose family has owned Powderham Castle since the late 14th century. He’s been having a bit of a clear-out recently, and the resulting haul goes up for auction at Sotheby’s on Tuesday.

Now to finish our England adventure from the other weekend. After our long day of driving on Saturday, we continued the trend on Sunday. Bright and early, we got up and headed for the east coast of Devon. Our first stop was the Dartmouth Castle. This castle is in a beautiful setting, along the English Channel at the mouth of the River Dart. Although the castle itself wasn’t too impressive, we...

It was a beautiful day yesterday and we weren't on grandson duty so my husband and I took off for the day. Our first port of call was the market at South Molton where we picked up local cheeses, new season's garlic, fruit and so on. I always look at the books there but this time found nothing I wanted. Not wanting to go straight home we picked up some sandwiches, bought suasage rolls from the WI stall...

If there was anyone more excited than A.J. Langer and Charles, Lord Courtenay about the birth of their second child, 4-week-old Jack Haydon, it was their first child, 2 ½-year-old Joscelyn Skye. “She was very into the whole process and gave my belly millions of kisses as it grew,” A.J., 35, tells Breezy Mama. “We talked about her baby brother/sister and if it would be a boy...

After leaving David and Doreen's, we headed north up to South Molton to stay at North Hayne Farm, where the weather took a turn for the worse. The farm was excellent. Every day at 9.3o am and 6pm, the children would go and feed the animals - rabbits, guinea pigs, goats, alpacas, chickens, ducks, pig, goats, sheep, and finally a ride on the donkeys. http://www.northhaynefarmcottages.co.uk/Gallery/Gallery001.htm...

Elizabeth Goudge spent only eleven years in Devon, having come down to Marldon in 1939 with her mother after her father’s death. You can find more about their move on the Goudge web-site here . Once in the county – just south of Dartmoor’s southern boundary – she took to her new surroundings like a duck to water. For her, places meant more than people. Years later, writing her...
