Our friend Robin Andrews has a new website promoting his private maths teaching and tuition for SATS, GCSEs and A level students www.mathstuitiondevon.co.uk . Robin is based in Buckfastleigh and Totnes but is prepared to travel across South Devon, the South Hams and Torbay to teach. He uses student centred teaching styles so that his approach is always suitable for the individual's needs.

Was talking to a chap at Devon Earth brewery the other day, a newish small operation based in Paignton, and was rather tickled to hear that he brews beer for monks (not punks). Neither does he brew like a monk, sadly. Instead a barrel of his Devon Earth bitter gets sent to the Benedictine brothers at Buckfastleigh Abbey, which can be found on the southern edge of Dartmoor (I sometimes drop in when...

An email has arrived in my inbox from legendary local historian, photographer and all round good egg, Bern The Lens. As is so often the case, he's sent me a cracking example of his photographic art. In his own words... " Occasionally, the preserved Railways borrow each other's engines. On the South Devon Railway, on loan from the Bodmin & Wenford Railway 4247 passes Dartington Hall on 1640...

Whilst I was away Kathie set me a blog challenge, to publish the fourth photo in the fourth file (photo storage) and write about it. Well here it is!!! During February half term whilst the girls were in Austria skiing (or breaking ankles as it turned out) Mick and I took the opportunity and went up to Devon for a few days. On the way back we stopped at Buckfastleigh Abbey and whilst walking

With the release by Ancestry of the Criminal Registers in HO26 and HO27 at The National Archives, I think I'd better revise slightly my statement in the Gidley Profile to the effect that the Gidleys were nearly all of good character. 25 references have been found to Gidleys, although 16 of those named were subsequently acquitted. Another was almost certainly a mistranscribed Gidlow. The years and counties...

Sunday saw myself and a friend take a trip aboard WHOTT's Bristol VR VDV 137S, also known as Victory, when she was being used by Devon General. This is the last of the shots taken at Holy Trinity Church, Buckfastleigh, Devon. Eternal Reflection In this shot, given that it's all about a church and cemetery, I wanted to include an obvious religious icon and turn the viewer's thoughts to reflection on their own mortality. When all is said and done and your life has run its course, what will your legacy be—other than bones and a tombstone?...

On Saturday 22nd November I had the blessing and sheer joy of visiting St. Mary's Abbey, better known at Buckfast Abbey, Buckfastleigh, Devon. Although I have been a visitor many times before it never ceases to inspire and uplift me. I was attending a quiet day and Holy Eucharist in the adjacent St. Cuthbert's Conference Centre. Buckfast Abbey is a Benedictine monastery on the edge of Dartmoor National...
