St Ives Cornwall - November Competition - Answer

I may have been tryng to be a bit too clever or obscure with this month's competition: St Ives Cornwall - November Competition 'Take a look at the photo above - you can click on it to see a larger version. Where am I in St Ives ?' The answer is: The narrow alleyway running past Barnoon Gospel Hall between Bowling Green Terrace and Barnoon. The Penwith Ogham Stone

It is not often that a new Ogham stone is discovered, so when last week someone asked me to take a look at a piece of slate with a possible Ogham inscription on it that they had just found, I was excited, but not overly hopeful that it would turn out to be a genuine Ogham inscription. I frequently get people sending me pictures of various artefacts to identify (mostly seals with supposed Phags-pa script...

Happy Holidays

D and I are just back from a rather wonderful week in Cornwall. We were pretty lucky with the weather and although it was cold, it was clear and just about the perfect weather for wandering along deserted beaches and staring wistfully out at the sea. As you can see from the photo, my Flicca cardigan got its very first outing in public, accompanying me to St Ives where we took in the sea air and visited...

Cottage envy

I have a severe case of cottage envy this evening, River Cottage envy. Yes, HFW is back on Channel 4 and not a day too soon. He brings a breath of fresh (winter) air to the screen with his easy laid-back manner and off the wall dry sense of humour. I love his foraging, fishing and hunting expeditions, his totally picturesque and well-run smallholding and what was the other thing – oh yes he can...

St Ives Cornwall - Shops

Trims Greengrocers - Now Sadly Closed I was really surprised when I got back from holiday in Spain to discover that another long established shop in town has closed - Trims Greengrocers. I don't know the full story but I heard that they closed down suddenly, with only a couple of days notice. Also that they're closed for good. If you know any different let me know. That leaves us with just one specialist...

View from St Ives bus stop We got to St Ives about 10, picking up a pasty as we walked through the town. St Ives Harbour It was lovely to be there without crowds of tourists! Porthminster Beach We walked out onto the headland, round to...

Cornish working holiday

In the style of Hepworth I felt it was essential to my practice that I take a break from my familiar surroundings and take a working holiday to a place that inspires me. Cornwall was my obvious choice. A place that I have spent many weeks of my childhood holidays and a place that holds so many memories for me. Cornwall is my second home, I love the walks on the beach, the storms out at sea, the sound...
