Not my photographs, just plucked off the web, but there is something peculiarly truthful about the bottom one. Torquay was early British Seaside to my family, the learning of the seaside code of fun. We started in Kent and, over the years, worked our way across the south coast, venturing at last into Devon and Cornwall. This time it was the invitation to do the pre-dinner reading on Saturday night...

I'm going to let the pictures tell the story of the last few days. On Saturday Simon, Emily, our dog Sam and I went for a week at Whitsand Bay (about 20 mins drive from us). it was a fantastic day and this is why we live in Cornwall. Emily, Simon and Sam: Isn't the beach stunning? There were some other people on the beach but not many. It's not an easy beach to get to. Access is a walk down a very...

• Villagers' fury at Charles's plan to build 2,000 homes • Somerset beauty spot will become 'a suburb of Bath' Residents of a sleepy Somerset village have accused Prince Charles of undermining his credibility as the guardian of rural Britain by planning to build 2,000 homes on rolling pasture and an environmentally friendly beef farm. I cannot believe we are almost halfway though October, it seems no time at all since this year started. But then again, we have had another busy year. A quick check with Glyn confirms we have commitments all this week. Looking back, I note we had holidays in Woolacombe in April, Italy in May, Pittenweem (Fife, Scotland) in August, Alicante (Spain) in September, we are off to Cornwall soon for 5 days....

I was out and about the other day in Somerset and on my way back to Gloucestershire I passed through Wiltshire. This got me to thinking, how many of the 86 counties in Great Britain have I actually visited (as in actually stopped there)? I thought it would be almost all of them... It's not. See the end of the post for my total - advise me oh worthy masses which unvisited counties should I go to...?...

Wed, 19 Aug 2009 1:28p.m. Thandie Newton has credited her mother with shielding her from racism while she was growing up in England - although her efforts strained their relationship at times. The actress is the daughter of Englishman Nick and Zimbabwean Nyasha, who emigrated to Britain to work as a nurse. As a result of her mixed heritage, the Crash star and her family were subjected to cruel taunting...
