Three quarters full circle

The seasons have gone three quarters full circle: the Scillonian is so far into the harbour she is practically on the Ross Bridge and the baulks are in place protecting Mousehole harbour from the winter storms. I am back to cycling in the dark, usually in wind and rain, looking a complete plonker in my high-viz jacket and fluorescent ankle bands, the road bike is moth-balled away awaiting the return...

Round Britain Rallied

The closing date for the Round Britain Rally , in which participants are challenged to find and photograph one or more landmarks for every county in England, Wales and Scotland, has passed and I have dispatched a CD of photos to the committee. It's all quiet on the western front. I'm in Cornwall for a couple of weeks, house- and cat-sitting. I don't know what it is about being down here but I feel cut off from all things Chelsea and football. I'm several miles from a pub with a big screen and Sky Sports. The house I'm staying in has a flakey net connection at best and no PCs - Macs only - so I struggle to watch internet streams of games....

Smeaton's Lighthouse lit by candles again

Our local media have been faithfully reporting the anniversary of the first lighting of Smeaton's Lighthouse on the treacherous Eddystone Reef. To be precise it was 250 years ago from this last Friday that 24 candles were first lit in the lighthouse and on Thursday evening the great and good congregated at the lighthouse on Plymouth Hoe to re-enact the lighting of those candles. I won't repeat here...

South West Holiday: Powderham Castle, Devon - edited highlights

Photos to follow Sunday 16th August It was the last day of the Temporary Holiday Site so after going to the DA coffee morning we hitched up and set off. We decided not to go to Cornwall as it would be too long a drive along busy, narrow roads but headed instead to Powderham castle, near Exeter. The journey was very good until the end when I missed the turning. We ended up driving to Dawlish before...

Newsletter 31

Photo: Me and Petty Officer 'Buzz' Honey (Truro lad) and child on bridge of HMS Quorn Dear friends I thought I would do this newsletter in a different format – as a kind of personal letter. I have now been onboard HMS Albion now since May and it has been a busy time. One of the difficult things is the ship’s programme can change in an instant because of mechanical problems. Also, because...
