According to sources, the canoeist Chris Wheeler, who unfortunately died after being trapped under his canoe while crossing a flooded stream, was a qualified expert who had enjoyed the activity for 25 years. Wheeler was dragged from the River Dart close to Newton Abbot on Saturday after being caught beneath a tree. The policemen from Cornwall [...]

When I was a teenager, Gothic novels formed a good part of my pleasure reading. They were the perfect escape, and I devoured them by the boxful. In a typical storyline, an attractive but naive young woman encounters danger and romance when she takes a position at a crumbling old castle or haunted mansion in the English countryside. She fights her attraction to the titled master of the house, a guarded,...

On Saturday, Truro was busy with shoppers. It reminded me that almost a year ago Woolworths closed - the shop now occupying the former Woolworths store in Truro seemed to be doing a brisk trade. However, in Falmouth the former Woolworths store has not yet re-let. The recession is affecting people, places, and businesses in different ways, even within Cornwall. Some places may turnaround more

(Click to enlarge) Site of a medieval monastery now inhabited by a wealthy family looked after by the National Trust. In the foreground is the causeway by which the island is reached at low tide. There is an additional charge for a ferry should you be still on the Mount after the causeway is submerged by the incoming tide. As a fellow passenger remarked "This is the first time I have had to pay...

It has been a restful day. I am taking it easy after a busy week and yesterday's Party Conference. The AGM went smoothly, there was an inspiring talk on modern campaign techniques from two Plaid Cymru members and the speeches in the afternoon were well received. Overall it was a very positive day, with many members reporting evidence of growing support across Cornwall. We are certainly looking forward...

I was born in Birmingham. I lived there for the first five years of my life, went away but came back at the age of fourteen, after which I lived and worked in and around the city for the next twenty five years, give or take the occasional year or so off in foreign places like the Outer Hebrides or Cornwall. I still visit the city but rarely now, and yesterday I was reminded of why. Birmingham was never...

Until I finish my next proper post, about Edward II's siege of Leeds Castle in the autumn of 1321, here are some pretty random photos of various places and things, most of which have sod-all to do with Edward II. Unfortunately I've been too busy at work lately to be able to devote much time to the blog, and also, distracted and upset by news of the terrible flooding in Cumbria, where I come from. Apparently...

Yesterday, I walked to Frenchman's Creek from Helford village. For nearly three whole hours I walked, took photographs, and saw no one. When I reached the creek, I met one woman and her two springer spaniels along the path. She had thought that she was the only one walking too. I was on a photo assignment for Cornwall Today magazine. It was actually the second time doing this walk but it's so pleasant...
