This Inn is haunted by what is known as a grey lady (the Wiki entry on this is disappointing, because they don’t seem to understand it is a generic term). According to the delightful book Haunted Inns of Surrey by Roger Long it is a good setting for ghosts, it is ancient and possesses, rumour dictates, at least two priest holes and one secret passage. The building began life as a 14th Century hunting...

How are cyclists meant to connect the dots of all these cycle lanes? Following my post earlier today on the 15 metres long cycle lane in Chertsey here’s the joke on the other side of the road.

Dear Surrey County Council, Your ingenuity is boundless. Unlike Paris , Berlin and other places, you not only provide cycle lanes where there is convenient space, but you provide cycle lanes where ever there is even just the smallest amount of convenient space. Such dedication. In the photo above you have found about 12 metres of space for cycles exiting the roundabout straight ahead. Such grandeur...

This is the statue of Charles James Fox in Chertsey, Surrey. He lived from 1749 to 1806 and his wikipedia entry describes him as being a Whig politically. He came from a family with radical and revolutionary tendencies and his first cousin and friend Lord Edward Fitzgerald was a prominent member of the Society of United Irishmen who was arrested just prior to the Irish Rebellion of 1798 and died of...

Here are some more photographs showing the parking situation in Chertsey, Surrey. As you can see from these and previous ones, the situation is as laissez faire as that any Parisian street. I notice that the one vehicle to actually be ticketed is the private car. These photos were all taken within about 30 minutes. My theory is that business vehicles are the worst offenders but get soft treatment.

Poor people's car park in stockbroker belt hospital An entertaining article from Wat Tyler who checks out the parking charges in his local hospital in Surrey. It's St Peter's Hospital, Chertsey . Remember them? They are the ones trying to recruit Polish doctors. Their answer to the parking problem is simple. The riff-raff are charged for parking at the free at the point of entry NHS part of the hospital....
