This letter from a resident of Thame in Oxfordshire really sums up what an atrocity the smoking ban has proved to be: The result of that has been the collapse of social networks, of organic resorts of camaraderie among some people, often the old and frail. Look at some of the sites on the Net devoted to campaigning for an amendment of the smoking law and read of the sadness and bitterness, not only...

Since we left Blisworth in mid-September, we knew that we were really planning to head south, down the Thames to Reading and then on to the Kennet and Avon, but we seemed to have been trundling up and down the Oxford Canal, with short trips on the Thames thrown in for good measure. We enjoyed it, but now it was time to begin the journey south in earnest! Ironically, to start off southwards we needed...

The charming story ( Report , 29 October) of the lady whose acromegaly was spot-diagnosed while travelling on a bus in Barcelona is not a new one. In 1889 the French neurologist Pierre Marie, who was the first to document and to name this disorder, described four patients of whom two were diagnosed solely on " simples rencontres faites dans la rue ". Dr Paul Lewis London • Is it just...

What a most marvellous week!!! I know it's been very very HOT and I mean HOT HOT HOT, but we surely must be thankful for all this lovely sunshine and the warmth on one's skin and the amazing blue skies that last all day and into the evening when they change to pale turquoise after 9 pm and gradually darken after 10.30 pm......BLISS!!! Last weekend the forecast was rain but we had sunshine and I fell...

Simon Jenkins (This Iraq inquiry is daft, 17 June) is certainly right in concluding that the inquiry is a waste of time. Perhaps more importantly, whether deliberately or not, it will obscure the key issue, was the attack on Iraq a war crime, or was it not? The Foreign Office legal officers at the time seem to have advised that it was indeed a crime, an illegal war of aggression. Do we have war criminals...

The de Thame household is looking forward to a new arrival. Not baby number five, but an altogether quieter, more predictable and practical addition. As I write, a new greenhouse is under construction in our Oxfordshire garden, and I am already anticipating spending countless happy hours within its walls.
