Only three games survive!

With just three games taking place this Sunday, Lydd probably wished their Kent Cup tie had also fallen foul of the weather as they crashed 8-0 to a strong Northfield Rangers side. Northfield, playing with the wind in the first half, had the game in the bag as they rattled in seven goals in the [...]

Historic Marsh building to be converted into flats

A historic building in Lydd, Kent, is being sold by auctioneers with permission granted to convert it into flats. The former hardware store in Coronation Square, Lydd, previously known as Woolley's, dates back to 1428, housed a medieval Court Hall and still has two early 16th Century Royal Coats of Arms displayed on the first floor. The building is one of the oldest and smallest surviving timber-framed...

Dungeness decision to be deeply regretted

Blog post by Donald Worsley, Labour Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Folkestone and Hythe. Ed Miliband’s decision to rule out a new Nuclear Power Plant for Dungeness is to be deeply regretted and one with which I fundamentally disagree. A new Plant at Dungeness would have secured more than 4000 jobs for Lydd and surrounding villages. Now their future as viable communities must be very...

Labour PPC Worsley Disagrees with Miliband Over Nuclear Decision

Largely ignored by most of the media, Folkestone and Hythe's Labour Prospective Parliamentary Candidate Donald Worsley has given his reaction to the government announcement that the Dungeness site will not be considered for a new power station. In a press release sent to From Under the Stone today but dated November 9, Mr Worsley calls the decision a 'hammer blow' for the Marsh and states 'Ed Miliband’s...

Storm batters SE Kent

Wind and rain have battered SE Kent today - 14th November - as the worst storm of the year moved East across the country. At its peak, wind speeds of nearly 90 miles an hour resulted in cross channel ferry crossings being suspended, delays to train services from Ashford and power cuts to parts of Romney Marsh. Sea France, LD Lines and P & O Ferries all experienced significant delays on their cross...

From Romney Marsh, with Love (part II)

In the second part of our interview with worldwide James Bond authority and Lydd resident Graham Rye, Kyle Hill finds out about Graham's move to Lydd and how local landmarks found their way into the super sleuth novels. Bond’s Neighbourhood Rye explained he had always desired to own a vintage home in Kent by the sea, a dream he achieved last year when he moved from Surrey to Lydd. Although Rye...

No to Boris Island

Tories showing off their green credentials again... this time it's Boris's turn - he wants to build an island in the Thames Estuary. The Tories on Kent County Council are up in arms, they have started a campaign to stop it and there is an online petition here . While KCC's position on BI is welcome, it is also strange. They are supporting airport expansion at Manston and Lydd so why not off the coast...

Thinking It Over and Over

Things are likely to be a little quiet around these parts for a while as an onerous work load (oh poor old me) takes its toll. I will at some point pop up in various places writing on topics as varied as the return of James Wines to the architectural consciousness, the geography of heavy metal and why suburbia isn't funny anymore, but for the moment all I can do is point you in the direction of some...

Those Megas just keep on coming........

A dark morph BOOTED EAGLE circled the Dungeness RSPB reserve area (Kent) from 1110-1125 hours late morning before flapping strongly off towards Lydd. This record fits in neatly with previous records of this species in Kent and elsewhere in Britain and continues a pattern of increasing eagle and vulture occurrences both here and on the close continent in recent years. Booted Eagle occurrences have also...

Animal rights activists threaten children

Well done to the children for having more sense than the idiot animal rights activists! A group of UK schoolchildren who reared a lamb from birth and named it Marcus, has overridden objections by parents and rights activists and voted to send the animal to slaughter. Marcus the six-month-old lamb has now been culled, the head teacher of the primary school in Kent confirmed, after the school's council...
